Tag/Day 0.B auf dem Weg zur/on the way to QUEEN ELIZABETH in Lyon, France

Als wir die Fläche für das Frühstücksbüffet sahen, dachten wir zunächst, dass es hier nichts gibt. Sie hatten wenig Platz, aber alles so mit Liebe und so toll angerichtet, dass man doch eine sehr große Auswahl hatte. So fängt ein Urlaub schon mal gut an.



When we saw the area for the breakfast buffet, we initially thought there was nothing there. They had little space, but everything was prepared so lovingly and well that you had an extensive selection. This is an excellent way to start a vacation.

Pratteln, Switzerland, is a trauma for me: I worked here for four years and didn't have the best memories. On the other hand, I was also there when Coop's chocolate house (Schoggihüsli) was opened. At that time, I learned that Coop is the producer of many international private label brands and then realized that you can get good broken chocolate here for little money. We had already bought a lot for the crew. But on the way, I thought that we were there in the car and that there were many lovely crew members on board at Cunard. So we bunkered down again. This also has been good! There were a lot of friendly crew members there. Someone in a Facebook group reprimanded me for this. She said it wouldn't be doing the crew any favors because there was enough chocolate on board, and the staff didn't need it. But I won't let such comments put me off: it's our DNA! Excellent crew members also receive our 2 USD bills as tips and chocolate.



Pratteln ist für mich ein Trauma: ich habe hier vier Jahre lang gearbeitet und nicht in bester Erinnerung. Andererseits war ich auch dabei, dass das Schoggihüsli von Coop entstanden ist. Ich habe damals gelernt, dass Coop der Produzent für viele internationale Eigenmarken des Handels ist und dann auch festgestellt, dass man hier für wenig Geld gute Bruchschokolade bekommt. Eigentlich hatten wir bereits jede Menge für die Crew gekauft. Aber unterwegs dachte ich noch, dass wir mit dem Wagen da sind und bei Cunard ja besonders viele nette Crewmitglieder an Bord sind. Also haben wir nochmals nachgebunkert. Das war auch gut so! Es waren sehr viele nette Crew-Mitglieder da. Eine aus einer Facebook-Gruppe hatte mich deswegen gerügt. Sie meinte, dass man der Crew keinen Gefallen damit tun würde, da es an Bord genügend Schokolade gibt und die Crew das nicht bräuchte. Aber von solchen Kommentaren lasse ich mich nicht beirren: das ist unsere DNS! Nette Crew-Mitglieder bekommen zusätzlich unsere 2 USD-Noten als Trinkgeld und Schokolade.

Unsere nächste Zwangspause ist in Bern. Witzigerweise waren wir hier schon mal am Westside: damals auf dem Weg zur MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 und auf dem Rückweg werden wir hier wiedernachten und auch wieder genau hier laden. Aber mit dem Elektroauto wird Energie unterwegs preiswerter, aber man muss Zeit mitbringen. Man fährt aber auch entspannter und muss eben mehr Stopps auch zum Übernachten einplanen. Wenn es ganz unglücklich kommt, wie auf der Rückfahrt muss man dann auch McDonald's aufsuchen, weil die ursprünglich eingeplante Ladesäule außer Betrieb ist und man dort im auswählten Restaurant nicht essen kann, wenn man nicht wieder Zeit verlieren will.



Our next compulsory break is in Bern, Switzerland. Funnily enough, we've already been here at Westside: back then, on the way to MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 and our return journey, we'll stay and load up here again. But with the electric car, energy on the go becomes cheaper, but you have to bring time. But you also drive more relaxed and have to plan more stops for overnight stays. If things get terrible, like on the way back, you have to go to McDonald's because the initially planned charging station is out of service, and you can only eat there in the restaurant you chose if you want to save time.

The next stop is in Gilly, Switzerland - partially on Lake Geneva. I'm on a forum for gay travelers. Someone from Lausanne attracted my attention, and I asked him if he knew of a good, not-too-expensive restaurant between Lausanne and Geneva. Geneva is priceless. I can't even drink coffee without going straight to UBS to get a new mortgage on our house. That's why we stop here: even a public charging station in the city parking garage — a nice little place in the Swiss mountains.



Der nächste Halt ist in Gilly - nicht ganz am Genfer See. Ich bin in einem Forum für schwule Reisende. Jemand aus Lausanne fiel mir auf und ich habe ihn gefragt, ob er ein gutes, nicht all zu teueres Restaurant zwischen Lausanne und Genf kennt. Genf ist unbezahlbar. Da trinke ich nicht mal eine Tasse Kaffee, ohne dass ich direkt die UBS aufsuchen muss, um eine neue Hypothek auf unser Haus aufzunehmen. Deswegen halten wir hier: es gibt sogar eine öffentliche Ladesäule im städtischen Parkhaus. Ein netter kleiner Ort in den Schweizer Bergen.

Wir essen im Auberge de Gilly. Es war eine weitere gute Vorbereitung auf das gute Essen, was uns an Bord erwarten würde. Ein richtig schöner Familienbetrieb, der alles auch für das Auge mit viel Liebe zum Detail vorbereite. "Meine Frau nahm wie immer den Fisch und der war gut!" - ein kleiner Running Gag seit unserer Reise auf der MSC MUSICA 2007. Und ich konnte natürlich nicht nein sagen, als frisches Tartar angeboten wurde. Es war fantastisch.



We eat at Auberge de Gilly. It was another excellent preparation for the good food awaiting us on board. It is a lovely family business that prepares everything for the eye with great attention to detail. "My wife took the fish as usual, and it was good!" - a little running joke since our trip on the MSC MUSICA 2007. And, of course, I couldn't say no when fresh tartar was offered. It was fantastic.

The last time I was here was as a student at 18: Geneva, Switzerland. We visited the UN World Weather Organization on a study trip to Valais, Switzerland. But I can also remember being here with my family as a little boy, and there are pictures in front of the flower clock. I wanted to visit this place. It is one of the places that brings me closer to the time I spent with my late father. I can still remember the big water fountain in Lake Geneva. I know Helvetia more from Basle, Switzerland. In the headlines of the German press: the Hotel Beau Rivage, where the regional politician Uwe Barschel's body was found. But Sissi (Empress Elizabeth of Austria) also died in this hotel. In the parking garage, we also read why it took us so long to get through Geneva: a demonstration. The disposal of the cigarette butts was successful: as a vote, whether you prefer raclette or fondue.



Zuletzt war ich als Schüler im Alter von 18 hier: Genf. Damals auf Studienfahrt im Wallis haben wir die UNO-Weltwetterorganisation besucht. Aber ich kann mich auch daran erinnern, dass ich mit meiner Familie als kleiner Junge hier schon war und es Bilder vor der Blumenuhr gibt. Diesen Ort wollte ich gerne aufsuchen. Er zählt zu den Orten, die mich an die gemeinsame Zeit mit meinem verstorbenen Vater näher bringt. An die große Wasserfontäne im Genfer See kann ich mich auch noch gut erinnern. Helvetia kenne ich wohl eher noch aus Basel. In den Schlagzeilen der deutschen Presse: das Hotel Beau Rivage, in dem der Leichnam von Uwe Barschel damals gefunden wurde. Aber auch Sissi verstarb in diesem Hotel. Im Parkhaus lesen wir auch den Grund, dass wir so lange durch Genf gebraucht haben: eine Demonstration. Die Entsorgung der Zigarettenkippen ist gelungen: als Abstimmung ob man lieber Raclette oder Fondue mag.

Wir waren schon an den Zentralen von Carnival, NCL und Royal Caribbean in Miami. Und wenn wir schon in Genf sind, können wir uns auch mal die Zentrale der MSC Cruises ansehen. Ich hätte gerne Gianni Onorato persönlich mal Guten Tag gesagt, weil er mir immer persönlich sehr freundlich antwortet, wenn ich ihm schreibe und für den tollen Service der Crew bedanke und auch ihm einen Link zum Blog schicke.

Wir fahren weiter auf der Autobahn durch Frankreich. Gerne zahlen wir hierfür. Denn sie sind i.d.R. in einem sehr guten Zustand. Es geht mitten durch die Alpen.



We continue on the motorway through France. We would happily pay for them because they are usually in good condition. It goes right through the Alps.



Das letzte Mal waren wir in Lyon auf dem Weg zur COSTA FAVOLOSA 2017. Allerdings nur sehr kurz für einen Umstieg plus Zeit für ein Mittagessen. Deswegen freuen wir uns, dass wir dieses etwas mehr Zeit haben, um die Stadt und das Essen zu entdecken. Wir wohnen im Crowne Plaza in Lyon. Dort erwartet man mich mit einem Upgrade (d.h. i.d.R. ein Bügelbrett und ein Bügeleisen mehr, aber hier war es doch sehr nett. Was sich doch verändert hat: die Arroganz der Franzosen mit dem Stolz auf Ihre Sprache. Wir lernen immer öfters, dass es denen nichts mehr ausmacht, auf Englisch zu antworten, selbst wenn ich auf Französisch frage und sie merken, dass ich mir einen abbreche. Vor allem eines: wenn sie Englisch sprechen, dann mit dem Charme den die französische Sprache mit sich bringt. Wir können im Parkhaus kostenlos laden. Aber leider so langsam, dass es selbst Übernacht nicht reicht, um wieder voll aufzuladen. Die Schilder, dass man doch freundlicherweise nach dem Laden die Ladesäulen wieder freigeben soll, sind absolut unnütz. Wahrscheinlich mit Absicht, damit noch ein wenig länger hier bleibt.



The last time we were in Lyon, France, was on the way to COSTA FAVOLOSA 2017. However, only a short change for a change plus time for lunch. That's why we're happy to have more time to discover the city and the food. We live at the Crowne Plaza in Lyon. There, they expected me to an upgrade (i.e., usually an ironing board and an iron more), but here, it was very nice — what has changed: the arrogance of the French with their pride in their language. We are learning more and more that they don't care. It makes no more difference to answer in English, even if I ask in French and they notice that I'm cutting one off. Above all, if they speak English, then with the charm that the French language brings. We can use it for free in the parking garage charging. But unfortunately, so slowly that even overnight, it's not enough to fully charge again. The signs that you should kindly rerelease the charging stations after setting are useless. Probably on purpose so that you can stay here a little longer.

This is another tip from someone from Lyon on the gay travel forum. His first tip would have been with Paul Bocuse. However, today, there is an Olympique Lyon game, and the restaurant is not open to the public. He explained to us that he (or rather his heirs) runs more than one restaurant and, as is usual in the circles of prominent star chefs, in different price segments. We know that from Gordon Ramsey, Scott Conant, and Daniel Boulud. As an alternative, he called Bouchon Les Lyonnais. A Bouchon is a typical restaurant in Lyon, with checkered tablecloths and narrow tables. Luckily, we had a reservation. After all, reservations had been processed, it was called "Full". Tables are rarely sold multiple times here. We experience the opportunity to enjoy a three-course menu at a very reasonable price. Lyon is considered the capital of French cuisine. And so we stuff ourselves and enjoy the great food. Nowadays, at the end comes the guillotine and, with it, certain death on a plate: a Café Gourmand - a dessert for all the gluttons in the world who can't decide. There is also Brioche-Fleur aux pralines roses de Lyon: a dream of a cake from Lyon. I'll buy the recipe book later for 5 EUR. Here, too, it is "phantastique" again.



Ein weiterer Tipp von einem aus Lyon im schwulen Reiseforum. Sein erster Tipp wäre in der Tat bei Paul Bocuse gewesen. Allerdings ist heute ausgerechnet ein Spiel von Olympique Lyon und das Restaurant damit nicht öffentlich zugänglich. Er hat uns erklärt, dass er (besser seine Erben) mehr als ein Restaurant betreibt und wie in den Kreisen der großen Sterneköche üblich: eben in verschiedenen Preissegmenten. Das kennen wir ja von Gordon Ramsey, Scott Conant und Daniel Boulud genauso. Als Alternative nannte er das Bouchon Les Lyonnais. Ein Bouchon ist ein typisches Restaurant in Lyon: mit karierten Tischdecken und enggestellten Tischen. Wir hatten zum Glück eine Reservierung. Nach dem alle Reservierungen abgearbeitet waren, hieß es "Complet". Hier werden selten Tische mehrfach verkauft. Wir erleben die Möglichkeit ein dreigängiges Menü zu einem sehr günstigen Preis zu genießen. Lyon gilt ja als Hauptstadt der französischen Küche. Und so stopfen wir uns voll und genießen das tolle Essen. Am Schluss kommt heutzutage die Guillotine und damit der sichere Tod auf einem Teller: ein Café Gourmand - ein Dessert für alle Vielfraße der Welt, die sich nicht entscheiden können. Auf dem gibt es auch Brioche-Fleur aux pralines roses de Lyon: ein Traum von einem Kuchen aus Lyon. Ich kaufe später noch für 5 EUR das Rezeptbuch. Auch hier ist es wieder "phantastique".

Wir sind so voll: wir laufen noch ein wenig durch die Altstadt und genießen das Leben auf den Straßen Lyons und fahren mit dem Bus zurück zum Hotel. Hier lernt man die Bedeutung von Essen wie Gott in Frankreich kennen und lieben. Ich muss hier schnellstens wieder weg - ich kann ja so schlecht nein sagen!



We are full: we walk through the old town, enjoy life on the streets of Lyon, and take the bus back to the hotel. Here, you learn and love the meaning of eating like God in France. I must leave here quickly - it's hard to say no!
