Tag/Day 1 auf der/on QUEEN MARY 2 in New York, NY

Zum Glück ist Avis in zehn Minuten zu Fuß erreichbar. Sie haben hier 43. Straße Ost 24 Stunden geöffnet. So kann ich um 12:30 Uhr bereits den Wagen abholen. Sie sind dort sehr nett. Ich habe es nicht geschafft, eine geöffnete Tankstelle zu finden: aber sie meinten nur: alles in Ordnung und dass ich mir darüber keine Sorgen machen soll.



Luckily, Avis is a ten-minute walk away. They are open 24 hours a day on East 43rd Street so that I can pick up the car at 00:30 hrs. They are very friendly. I couldn't find an open gas station, but they said everything was fine and I shouldn't worry about it.



Ich war ja schon auf dem Weg zum Fotografieren, als endlich die Ankunftszeit der QUEEN MARY 2 in New York aktualisiert wurde. Also fahre ich wieder zurück. Und gönne mir erst mal ein Lamm-PIta und ein Sunkist - Das gibt es in Deutschland glaube ich schon gar nicht mehr! Ich kann mich erinnern: als Kind habe ich das öfters getrunken.



I was already on my way to take photos when the arrival time of QUEEN MARY 2 in New York was finally updated. So I drove back. First, I treated myself to a lamb pita and a Sunkist — I don't think they even have that in Germany anymore! I remember: I drank it a lot as a child.

2nd attempt after an hour of half-sleep: Yes, I made it to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on time. I expected to be in a dangerous place, but the parking lot on the Bay Ridge Promenade is quite busy now. Carpoolers probably meet here to save on the bridge toll. I only attract attention because I take photos with a camera instead of a smartphone. I quickly drive on to the Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier. After another ten minutes, QUEEN MARY 2 arrives and pulls past the Statue of Liberty and the southern tip of Manhattan.



2. Versuch nach einer Stunde Halbschlaf: Jawohl - ich habe es pünktlich zur Verrazzano-Narrows-Bridge geschafft. Eigentlich habe ich erwartet, dass ich an einem gefährlichen Pflaster wäre, aber zu meinem Erstaunen ist der Parkplatz an der Bay Ridge Promenade um diese Zeit recht gut besucht. Es treffen sich wohl die Fahrgemeinschaften hier, um die Brückenmaut zu sparen. Ich falle lediglich auf, weil ich eben mit Kamera statt Smartphone fotografiere. Ich fahre schnell weiter zum Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier. Nach weiteren zehn Minuten kommt die QUEEN MARY 2 und zieht an der Freiheitsstatue und vor die Südspitze Manhattans.

Es ist leider so windig, und einkalt, dass es mir nicht möglich ist, mit Stativ zu fotografieren. Deswegen wirkt die Freiheitsstatue unscharf.

Unfortunately, this also applies to the southern tip of Manhattan: We were on the World Trade Center before the QUEEN MARY 2 2017 trip.



Das gilt leider auch für die Südspitze von Manhattan: Auf dem Word Trade Center waren wir damals vor der Reise auf der QUEEN MARY 2 2017.

Es geht wieder zu Tartinery. Für mich gibt es dieses Mal ein tolles Roastbeef-Sandwich und ein paar Schweinshaxen auf einem Stuhl serviert. Ich würde ja zu gerne eine Kanne heißen Kaffee fallen lassen. Dann gebe es Eisbein - ist ja schließlich gekocht dann und nicht gegrillt. Können sich das Lokal leisten, aber sich nicht benehmen...



We're going to Tartinery again. This time, I have a great roast beef sandwich, and a couple of grilled pork knuckles, Bavarian style, served on a chair. I'd love to drop a pot of hot coffee. Then there's boiled pork knuckles Berlin style—after all, it's cooked and not grilled. They can afford the place, but they don't behave.



Bei Dorothy von Cruise Brothers habe ich eine andere Buchungsstrategie: vor etwa zwei Jahren haben wir bereits gebucht: damals noch 1600 USD pro Person in einem ummantelten Balkon Südseite! Bei jeder Promotion wurde geprüft: ist es vorteilhaft oder nicht. Am Schluss haben wir etwa 2000 USD bezahlt und mussten auf 500 USD OBC verzichten. Wir hätten noch mitbieten können. Da wir aber nicht alleine reisen, und wir gerne neben Ralf bleiben wollten, haben wir auf ein Upgrade-Angebot verzichtet. Beim nächsten Mal im Oktober 2025 können wir ja mal versuchen, in die Princess Grill zu kommen. Keine Ahnung, wie Dorothy das gemacht hat: wir haben bereits ein Jahr vor der Reise ein kostenloses Upgrade in den Britannia Club. Mal gucken, ob wir dann für den Princess Grill bieten können.



I have a different booking strategy with Dorothy from Cruise Brothers: we booked about two years ago, but at that time, it was still 1600 USD per person in a sheltered balcony facing South! Every promotion was checked to see if it was advantageous or not. Ultimately, we paid about 2000 USD and had to forego 500 USD OBC. We could have bid. But since we are not traveling alone and wanted to stay next to Ralf, we decided against an upgrade offer. Next time, in October 2025, we can get into the Princess Grill. I have no idea how Dorothy did it: we already got a free upgrade to the Britannia Club a year before the trip. Let's see if we can then bid for the Princess Grill.

This sounds familiar: QUEEN VICTORIA 2008 - we had the same situation on our first transatlantic voyage. I assumed that she would come in earlier so that the intensive cleaning could begin earlier. But we received a message that everything had been delayed by two hours. In the end, we were allowed to board 2:30 hours late.



Das kommt uns bekannt vor: QUEEN VICTORIA 2008 - damals hatten wir bei unserer ersten Transatlantik die gleiche Situation. Ich nahm daher an, dass sie früher reinkommt, um früher mit der Intensivreinigung begonnen wird. Aber wir bekamen eine Nachricht, dass sich alles um zwei Stunden nach hinten verschoben ist. Am Schluss waren es 2:30 Stunden Verspätung, mit der wir an Bord durften.





Schade, dass keine MSC MERAVIGLIA da ist. Ich hätte sie ja zu gerne mal wiedergesehen, nach unserer MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017-Reise. Unsere Ausdrucke zum Einschiffen, wurden uns abgenommen, weil sie als Nachweis gebraucht wurden, das wir das Land auf anderem Wege verlassen und deswegen keinen Rückflug haben. Wir bekommen neue aus dem Handdrucker. Einschiffungsnummer 2. Nur die Suiten haben eine niedrigere Nummer. Unsere Pässe werden nochmals kontrolliert, ob wir eine Einreiseanmeldung für Großbritannien brauchen. Für Einreisen nach dem 02.04.2025 müssen auch EU-Bürger das beantragen.



It's a shame that there is no MSC MERAVIGLIA here. I would have loved to see it again after our MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 trip. Our boarding documents were taken away because they were needed as proof that we were leaving the country by another means and, therefore, had no return flight. We get new ones from the hand printer. Embarkation number 2. Only the suites have a lower number. Our passports were rechecked to see if we needed entry registration for Great Britain. EU citizens must also apply for this for entries after April 2, 2025.

Since we are now CWC Diamond members, we were allowed to wait in a separate room. We were given water. There was no possibility of getting something to eat. Some people called the delivery service. Luckily, I had a few snacks with me, so I was able to eat them and then get some sleep.



Da wir mittlerweile CWC Diamond Mitglieder sind, durften wir im separaten Raum warten. Wir bekamen Wasser. Eine Möglichkeit sich etwas zu essen zu holen, gab es nicht. Manche haben den Lieferdienst angerufen. Ich hatte zum Glück ein paar Snacks mit und konnte sie aufessen und dann ein wenig schlafen.





Willkommen an Bord. Sofort gehen wir zu den Sammelstationen und so haben wir auch diesen Punkt schnell hinter uns gebracht.

Only the Kings Court is still open because the Britannia Restaurant did not offer lunch due to the delayed boarding, so we went straight there. I had assumed that I was going on a ship, and I knew no one from the crew on the ship. I wrote to around 25 crew members and was always turned down: either on holiday or most of them on QUEEN ANNE, but no one had reported back from QUEEN MARY 2. And then Ralph is there. We have known him since QUEEN MARY 2 2014, as the restaurant manager for Todd English, whom I loved. I booked a table directly through him for the Reviera night and in The Verandah. You are only allowed to take pre-portioned food for yourself. Otherwise, everything is handed to you. Some people don't like that and don't understand the measures. They try to serve themselves if they don't think it's going fast enough. I have a problem with the food: I find everything very bland. So, I did a COVID-19 test to be on the safe side, but I am negative.



Da nur der Kings Court noch geöffnet hat, weil das Britannia Restaurant wegen der verspäteten Einschiffung kein Mittagessen angeboten hat, sind wir direkt dort. Ich hätte fest angenommen, dass ich auf ein Schiff gehe und ich kenne absolut niemanden von der Crew auf dem Schiff. Ich habe ca. 25 Crew-Mitglieder angeschrieben und ich habe immer einen Korb bekommen: entweder Urlaub oder die meisten auf der QUEEN ANNE, bloß niemand, der sich von der QUEEN MARY 2 zurückgemeldet hat. Und dann ist Ralph da. Ihn kennen wir von der QUEEN MARY 2 2014, als Restaurant Leiter vom Todd English, den ich geliebt habe. Über ihn bestelle ich direkt einen Tisch für die Reviera-Nacht und in The Verandah. Man darf nur vorportionierte Speisen sich selbst nehmen. Sonst wird einem alles gereicht. Einigen passt das nicht und sie haben kein Verständnis für die Maßnahmen. Sie versuchen sich selbst zu bedienen, wenn es in ihren Augen nicht schnell genug geht. Ich habe etwas Probleme mit dem Essen: ich finde alles sehr fade. So mache ich sicherheitshalber einen Covid-19-Test, aber ich bin negativ.

Vor dem Kings Court werden Getränkepakete angeboten. Wir nehmen wieder das Kaffeepaket, das auch Tee und geeiste Kaffee- und Teegetränke umfasst. Wir haben auf der QUEEN VICTORIA 2022 noch 10 USD/Tag*Person bezahlt. Auf der QUEEN VICTORIA 2024 waren es noch 12,50 USD und jetzt sind es 17,50 USD.



Drink packages are offered in front of Kings Court. We are again taking the coffee package, which also includes tea, iced coffee, and tea drinks. We paid 10 USD/day*person on QUEEN VICTORIA 2022. On QUEEN VICTORIA 2024, it was 12.50 USD, and now it is 17.50 USD.

Then there's the internet. As CWC Diamond members, we have a credit of 135.00 USD that we can use against any package. It's good: you can try it for one hour for free to see if it works. Before the trip, they offered good internet for 24.00 USD/day. CWC members were supposed to buy it on board under the same conditions. Later, I noticed that they wanted 28.00 USD onboard instead. I complained late because I only saw it when editing my pictures. They were very fair, but the complaint came too late. They gave us an OBC to make up for this disadvantage. Switching between devices is very easy if you only bought one device.



Da wäre noch das Internet. Wir haben als CWC Diamond Mitglied ein Guthaben von 135,00 USD das wir gegen ein beliebiges Paket verrechnen können. Gut finde ich: man darf eine Stunde kostenlos probieren, ob es gut läuft. Vor der Reise haben sie das gute Internet für 24,00 USD/Tag angeboten. CWC Mitglieder sollten es an Bord kaufen, zu den gleichen Bedinungen. Später merke ich, dass man Bord 28,00 USD stattdessen haben wollte. Ich habe es sehr spät reklamiert, weil es mir beim Editieren meiner BIlder erst aufgefallen ist. Sie waren sehr fair: die Beschwerde kam zu spät: sie haben aber einfach uns einen OBC gewährt, um diesen Nachteil wieder auszugleichen. Wenn man nur für ein Gerät gekauft hat, ist der Wechsel zwischen den Geräten sehr einfach gestaltet.

Wir dürfen unsere Kabine beziehen. Unsere Betten sind bereits auseinandergestelt und es gibt von Dorothy von Cruise Brothers ein paar Canapés.



We are allowed to move into our cabin. Our beds have already been put apart, and Dorothy from Cruise Brothers has brought us some canapés.

There is a kettle and mineral water for sale in the cabin. The fridge looks very messy and unloved. Afterward, we realize that the compartment in the door is missing, so you can't put anything in there. We have our jugs with us again and can supply water that way. They used to have their brand that you could use to buy water in the cabin very cheaply, but times are changing.



In der Kabine gibt es wieder einen Wasserkocher und auch Mineralwasser zum Kauf. Der Kühlschrank wirkt sehr unordentlich und lieblos. Hinterher stellen wir fest: das Fach in der Tür fehlt und so kann man hier nichts reinstellen. Wir haben wieder unsere eigenen Krüge mit und können uns so mit Wasser versorgen. Die hatten früher mal so eine Eigenmarke, mit der man sich sehr günstig in der Kabine mit Wasser versorgen konnte, aber die Zeiten ändern sich.

Wie üblich gab es wieder viel Papier. Sehr praktisch ist jedoch das Programm auf dem Smartphone, das man überall an Bord dabei hat.

From our balcony, we enjoy the view of the skyline from the southern tip of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.



Von unserem Balkon genießen wir die Aussicht auf die Skyline von der Südspitze Manhattans und auf die Freiheitsstatue.

Gut ist, dass vorab veröffentlicht wird, welche Themenabende auf der Reise anstehen, so dass man sich in Ruhe vorbereiten kann.

Das erste Abendessen im Britannia Restaurant führt zum Schock! Jetzt verlangt Cunard für den Hummer auch schon Geld. Zu Weihnachten und Silvester gab es den wohl ausnahmsweise kostenlos.



The first dinner at the Britannia Restaurant is a shock! Now Cunard is even demanding money for the lobster, which was apparently free as an exception at Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Those were the days when surf and turf were offered free of charge, as was the case on the last transatlantic crossing on QUEEN MARY 2 2017.

Those weird chocolate things — someone must have found a surplus in the warehouse just before the best-before date. True to the motto, you don't leave the ship until they've all been eaten. We couldn't resist them until the end of the trip: we had them every evening. I'm so exhausted that I'm skipping the first show.



Diese komischen Schokoladendinger: da muss wohl jemand im Lager einen Überbestand kurz vor Ende des Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum gefunden haben. Frei nach dem Motto: es kommen erst alle von Bord, wenn sie alle aufgegessen sind. Wir konnten uns bis zum Ende der Fahrt nicht dagegen wehren: es gab sie jeden Abend. Ich bin so kaputt: auf die erste Show verzichte ich.
