Wir müssen nur einmal quer über den Russell Square. Das ist ein sehr schöner Park. Ein Treffpunkt wohl für die Nachbarschaft. Hier hätten wir auch schön frühstücken können.
We are going to the British Museum. Admission is free, though visitors are still asked to donate. Wir gehen zum British Museum. Hier kann man kostenlos rein. Man wird allerdings gebeten, dennoch eine Spende zu leisten.Wir haben eine Tour vor der Öffnung gebucht. Davon gibt es einige: Wir haben aber quasi das "British Museum für Dummies". Wir folgen daher Lawrence, der uns sehr anschaulich erklärt, wie das British Museum entstanden ist und welche Schätze sich hier befinden. Anhand einiger ausgewählter Objekte wird uns die Kultur vergangener Zeiten nähergebracht. Mit der Erläuterung sehen wir die Objekte komplett anders.
We booked a pre-opening tour. Several options are available, but we chose the "British Museum for Dummies" version. We followed Lawrence, who vividly explains how the British Museum came to be and what treasures it houses. Through a selection of specific objects, we gain insight into past cultures; thanks to his explanations, we view the artifacts in a completely different light.We're out of luck: everything was perfectly timed — two more guided tours were supposed to follow. But the temperature in the exhibition rooms beneath the glass roofs ranges from 40 °C to 45 °C. For safety reasons, all the exhibition rooms on the top floors are closed. Very few of the exhibition rooms are air-conditioned. We ask the attendants which rooms are coolest — for example, the Africa section.
Wir haben Pech: Wir hatten das super durchgetaktet: zwei weitere Führungen sollten folgen. Aber in den Ausstellungsräumen unterhalb der Glasdächer liegt die Temperatur zwischen 40 °C und 45 °C. Aus Sicherheitsgründen sind alle Ausstellungsräume in den Dachgeschossen gesperrt. DIe wenigsten Ausstellungsräume sind klimatisiert. Wir fragen bei der Aufsicht nach, welche Ausstellungsräume am kühlsten sind: z.B. Afrika.Die niederländischen Zeichner waren wohl nicht von besonderem Interesse. Hier fanden wir sogar Bänke, auf denen wir uns eine Zeit lang im klimatisierten Raum ausruhen konnten.
The Dutch drawings weren't particularly interesting, but we found benches where we could rest for a while in the air-conditioned room.Then it was off to Japan. The air conditioning worked there, too, but you'd need a guide to introduce you to the culture.
Dann ging es nach Japan. Hier funktionierten auch die Klimaanlagen, aber dafür bräuchte man wohl einen Führer, der einen in die Kultur einführt.Korea war schön kühl, aber irgendwie konnten wir mit deren Kunstwerken nicht so richtig etwas anfangen. Auch hier müssen wir wiederkommen und eine geführte Tour buchen.
Korea was pleasantly cool, but we couldn't connect with the artwork there. We'll have to come back and book a guided tour for that, too.
Then came the Chinese porcelain collection. Naturally, this piqued my interest — especially since I had worked in the porcelain department at the KaDeWe department store in Berlin during my university studies. I was also in luck: the exhibition was so impressive that a Chinese tour group was visiting at the same time, and their guide explained the significance of the objects in Chinese. Dann kam die chinesische Porzellansammlung. Das stieß natürlich auf mein Interesse. Zumal ich ja während meines Studiums in der Porzellanabteilung des Kaufhauses des Westens (KaDeWe) in Berlin gejobbt habe. Des Weiteren hatte ich Glück: Die Ausstellung scheint so gut zu sein, dass auch eine chinesische Reisegruppe sich hier aufhielt und deren Führer erklärte auf Chinesisch, was es mit den Objekten auf sich hatte.Wir hatten ja noch zwei geführte Touren gebucht. Einmal hätte es um die Welt gehen sollen, aber wegen der Hitze unterhalb des Daches wurde diese Tour abgesagt. Wir hatten auch noch eine queere Tour gebucht. Aber auch die wurde abgesagt. Zufällig habe ich an der Information gesehen, dass mittags noch eine Tour stattfinde. Das war Inklusion pur! Unser Führer war gehörlos und man hat ihm einen Gebärdendolmetscher an die Seite gestellt, der alles übersetzt. Hier ging es darum, dass in der Vergangenheit Nacktheit beispielsweise als vollkommen "Normales" galt und sich daher auch in der Kunst entsprechend wiederfand. Auch hier konnten wir nur die halbe Tour machen, weil ein Teil der Tour in den Hallen unter dem Dach stattgefunden hätte. Es war eine tolle Truppe und hat uns sehr viel Spaß gemacht.
We had actually booked two guided tours. One was supposed to cover a "trip around the world," but it was canceled because of the heat in the spaces beneath the roof. We had also booked a "Queer Tour," but that was canceled as well. I noticed at the information desk that another tour was taking place at midday. It was a fantastic example of inclusion! Our guide was deaf and was accompanied by a sign language interpreter who translated everything. The focus here was on how, in the past, nudity was considered completely "normal" and was therefore reflected in art. Once again, we could only complete half the tour because part of it was scheduled to take place in the halls under the roof. It was a great group, and we really enjoyed ourselves.We'll quickly grab a sandwich at the hotel. We don't feel like doing anything more than that in this weather anyway.
Schnell gehen wir noch ein Sandwich im Hotel essen. Für mehr haben wir bei dem Wetter eh keine Lust.Nach dem gestrigen Flopp im Royal Ballet and Opera suchen wir heute ein Theater, das mit den Temperaturen zurechtkommt. Es wird "Titanique" im Criterion Theater gezeigt. Das Theater liegt direkt am Piccadilly Circus und ist im Keller gebaut. Es kommt also keine Sonne, die das Ganze aufheizen kann. Es ist eine Persiflage auf den Film Titanic mit Bezug auf Céline Dion. Eine Rolle wird mit wechselnden Schauspielern besetzt, damit es nicht langweilig wird. Als wir uns das ansehen, wird die Rolle der Mutter von William Hanson. Er ist der YouTuber für englische Etikette. Wir genießen unseren dreistündigen Aufenthalt in einem klimatisierten Raum, in dem wir gleichzeitig lachen können.
After yesterday's flop at the Royal Ballet and Opera, we are looking for a theater that can handle the heat today. "Titanique" is playing at the Criterion Theatre. Located right at Piccadilly Circus, the theater is built underground, so no sunlight heats the place. It is a spoof of the movie "Titanic" that incorporates references to Céline Dion. A rotating cast of actors plays one of the roles to keep things fresh. In the show, William Hanson plays the mother — the YouTuber known for his expertise in English etiquette. We enjoy our three-hour stay in an air-conditioned space where we can laugh.Since it's hotter inside the bus than on the street, we decided to walk to Kensington — along Piccadilly and Knightsbridge, then past Hyde Park. We weren't hungry anyway, since it was too hot. We probably would have taken the bus as far as Hyde Park Corner — stuck in an overheated, stuffy vehicle — instead of walking the whole way.
Da es im Bus heißer ist als draußen auf der Straße, laufen wir kurzerhand zu Fuß nach Kensington: entlang der Straßen Piccadilly und Knightsbridge und später am Hyde Park. Hunger haben wir eh keinen, weil es zu heiß ist. Wir hätten wohl bis zum Hyde Park Corner im Bus gebraucht, statt den ganzen Weg zu Fuß zu gehen, und das noch im überhitzten, stickigen Bus.Wir sind an der Royal Albert Hall. Da dieser Rundbau sehr großzügig gebaut wurde, lässt es sich hier aushalten. Es könnte noch ein wenig kühler sein, aber im Vergleich zum Royal Ballet and Opera ist es doch erträglich. Neben dem Royal Ballett gibt es auch das English National Ballett. Hier sehen wir uns Dornröschen an. Diese Eleganz: Ich hätte hier stundenlang denen noch zugucken können. Das war der perfekte Abschluss für einen heißen Tag.
We are at the Royal Albert Hall. Since this circular building is so spacious, it is a comfortable place to be. It could be a little cooler, but compared to the Royal Ballet and Opera, it is certainly bearable. Alongside the Royal Ballet, there is also the English National Ballet; here, we are watching "Sleeping Beauty". Such elegance — I could have sat there watching them for hours. It was the perfect way to end a hot day.We need breakfast, then we head to the airport. I had actually pictured things differently. For some reason, I told the taxi driver we wanted to go to Baker Street, even though we should have gone to Bond Street. We drop off our luggage via Bounce, so we're free to walk around without it.
Wir müssen frühstücken und danach zum Flughafen fahren. Eigentlich habe ich mir das anders vorgestellt. Warum auch immer dem Taxifahrer sage ich, dass wir zur Baker Street wollen, dabei hätten wir zur Bond Street fahren müssen. Wir geben unser Gepäck über Bounce wieder ab und können daher ohne Gepäck herumlaufen.Auf der letzten Reise mit der COSTA DIADEMA 2026 haben wir Daisy Green kennengelernt. Weil ich dort eine Tasche hängen lassen hatte, sagte mir die Filialleitung von Audi damals, dass das bedeutet, dass man wiederkommt. So kommen wir wieder und werden von ihr mit einem Willkommensgruß überrascht. Leckeres Essen und nette Menschen, die uns bedienen: Kann man von der Welt mehr verlangen?
We met Daisy Green during our last trip on COSTA DIADEMA 2026. Because I left a bag behind there, the branch manager told me then that it was a sign we would return. So here we are again, and she surprised us with a warm welcome. Delicious food and friendly people serving us — could one ask for anything more from the world?Since we're already at the wrong subway station, we should take the chance to buy something at Sherlock Holmes' house.
Wenn wir eh schon am falschen U-Bahnhof stehen, können wir ja die Gelegenheit nutzen, etwas im Haus von Sherlock Holmes zu kaufen.
I would have liked to look around the London Beatles Store, too, but it was far too cramped and hot, so I backed out again as quickly as possible.
Ich hätte mich auch gerne im London Beatles Store umgesehen, aber es war viel zu eng und heiß, sodass ich schnellstmöglich rückwärts wieder raus bin.Um die Ecke finden wir eine Filiale von Da Michele. Also brauchen wir uns mittlerweile in Neapel nicht mehr extra anzustellen, um dort zu essen.
We found a Da Michele branch just around the corner. So, we no longer need to go out of our way to queue up in Naples to eat there.Since we're heading in the wrong direction anyway, we'll take a taxi to Paddington Station, where we can also visit Paddington Bear.
Da wir ja eh verkehrt sind, nehmen wir ein Taxi zum Bahnhof Paddington und können dort noch den Paddington-Bären besuchen.Entweder mit der Elizabeth Line und noch 25 Minuten in der Hitze aushalten (im U-Bahn-Tunnel ist es nicht zwangsweise kühler!) oder direkt mit dem nächsten Heathrow Express und teurer Notstop zum Flughafen. Wir entscheiden uns, den Heathrow Express zu nehmen und direkt in einen gut klimatisierten Zug einzusteigen.
It was a choice between taking the Elizabeth Line — and enduring another 25 minutes in the heat (it isn't necessarily cooler in the underground tunnels!) — or heading straight to the airport on the next Heathrow Express, despite the higher cost. We decided to take the Heathrow Express and step straight into a well-air-conditioned train.We head to the South Galleries Lounge in London to wait for our flight. After all, it is British Airways' home base, so one shouldn't set one's expectations too high. And that certainly turned out to be the case.
Wir gehen in London in die South Galleries Lounge, um dort auf unseren Abflug zu warten. Es ist halt die Heimatbasis von British Airways: daher sollte man die Erwartungen nicht allzu hoch schrauben. Und dem war denn auch so.Auf dem Rückflug habe ich Glück: Ich trage mein Positive Altitude T-Shirt von Mentour Pilot. Als ich anfrage, ob ich mal ein Selfie mit mir und der Anzeige im Cockpit machen darf, lässt man es mir sofort zu. Ansonsten ist es ein ruhiger Flug. Das Essen an Bord fand ich ziemlich gut. In Frankfurt ist unser Gepäck schnell da: Im Gepäckabschnitt gab es doch einen "Priority"-Hinweis von British Airways. Also ist er keinesfalls abgeschafft worden.
I get lucky on the return flight: I'm wearing my "Positive Altitude" T-shirt from Mentour Pilot. When I ask if I can take a selfie with the cockpit display, I get the go-ahead immediately. Otherwise, it's a quiet flight. The in-flight meal was pretty good. Our luggage arrives quickly in Frankfurt: the baggage tag actually bears a "Priority" indicator from British Airways. So, the system certainly hasn't been scrapped.
