Today I'm having double-sided fried eggs: two of them. That's a challenge in these little pans. At home, I'd have someone to renovate the kitchen afterwards... but here?We took the bus to Gare du Nord and looked for the Eurostar entrance. On the way, we saw one of the pianos that anyone could play to entertain the other passengers. I was out of luck: no one was there today. There are such great reels where someone plays the piano, and other musicians join in by singing along or unpacking their instruments. The baggage check and immigration to the UK took place just like on an airplane. A bit annoying: the train consists of two sections, and there are two entrances to the platform. First, they said our section entrance was occupied and that we should use the other one. Then, however, ours was opened after all. I love chaos. With Deutsche Bahn (German Railways), it always means: "The train is running in reverse order today," and then everyone rearranges themselves, and then it arrives correctly after all. Most people are "rearranging" their carriages. Overseas tourists who are away from home for a long time and therefore have several large suitcases. That's why you should arrive early to check in and store your luggage. Since we booked a fare in the "simpler" first class, food is included. However, we don't have the same choices as the first passengers who were served. We only get the quinoa salad. Next, I know that I can let them know what I want when boarding, and they can tell me.
Mit dem Bus fahren wir zum Gare du Nord und suchen dort den Zugang zum Eurostar. Unterwegs sehen wir einer der Klaviere, die jedermann einfach bespielen kann um die anderen rundumherum zu unterhalten. Ich habe Pech: heute ist keiner da. Es gibt so tolle Reels, in denen jemand am Klavier spielt und andere Musiker mitmachen, in dem sie mitsingen oder ihre Instrumente auspacken. Wie im Flugzeug findet die Gepäckkontrolle und die Einreise nach Großbritannien statt. Etwas blöd: der Zug besteht aus zwei Zugteilen und es gibt zwei Zugänge zum Bahnsteig. Es heißt zuerst, dass unser Zugang zu unserem Zugteil besetzt sei und man bitte den anderen nutzen sollte. Dann wurde unser aber doch aufgemacht. Ich liebe Chaos. Bei der Deutschen Bahn bedeutet das immer: "Der Zug ist heute im umgekehrter Wagenreihung" und dann stellen sich alle um, und dann ist er doch korrekt reingefahren. Die meisten Leute ziehen "um". Überseetouristen, die lange von zu Hause weg sind und daher mehrere große Koffer mitführen. Deswegen sollte man schon früh da sein, um sein Gepäck unterbringen zu können. Da wir einen Tarif in der "einfacheren" erste Klasse buchen, gibt es auch etwas zu essen. Aber wir bekommen keine Auswahlmöglichkeiten, wie die ersten Gäste, die bedient wurden. Wir bekommen nur den Quinoa-Salat. Das nächste weiß ich, dass ich beim Einsteigen Bescheid geben kann, was ich will und das können sie mir beiseite stellen.Wir kommen pünktlich am Bahnhof St. Pancras an. Schade: Früher endete der Zug am Bahnhof Waterloo. So müssen wir also weiter zum Bahnhof Waterloo. Wir könnten mit der U-Bahn fahren, aber nach dem letzten Mal von Stratford nach Waterloo hatte ich beschlossen: NIE WIEDER U-Bahn mit großem Gepäck. Ich hatte im Vorfeld geprüft, wie viel ein Taxi und ein Uber kosten, und war fast rückwärts umgefallen, als ich sah, dass ein Uber sehr viel mehr kostete als ein Taxi. Zufällig stieß ich bei weiteren Recherchen auf die Minicabs, die noch günstiger sind. Aber Uber hat dynamische Preise und heute wird mir ein sehr "normaler" Preis angezeigt. Bevor ich jetzt schon wieder ein Konto anlegen muss, buche ich wieder Uber. Das klappt gut und wir sind bald am Bahnhof Waterloo. Nun haben wir die notwendige Ruhe, um etwas zu essen. Marugame Udon ist eine japanische Nudelsuppenkette, in der die Nudeln von Hand in der Schauküche hergestellt werden. Das Restaurant befindet sich auf der oberen Ebene, so dass es hier ruhiger zugeht als auf der Verteilerebene. Darm man als schwuler auf die Damentoilette. Da soll eine japanische Toilette mit integriertem Bidet sein.
We arrive at St. Pancras station right on time. Too bad: the train used to terminate at Waterloo station. So we have to continue to Waterloo Station. We could take the Tube, but after my last trip from Stratford to Waterloo, I decided: NEVER AGAIN Tube with lots of luggage. I had checked beforehand how much a taxi and an Uber would cost, and almost fell over backwards when I saw that an Uber cost significantly more than a taxi. During further research, I came across minicabs, which are even cheaper. But Uber has dynamic pricing, and today I'm being shown a very "normal" price. Before I create another account, I book another Uber. That works well, and we're soon at Waterloo station. Now that we have the peace, we can get something to eat. Marugame Udon is a Japanese noodle soup chain where the noodles are made by hand in the open kitchen. The restaurant is on the upper level, so it's quieter than on the concourse level. If you're gay, you can go to the women's restroom. Apparently, there's a Japanese toilet with an integrated bidet there.Since Marugame Udon didn't even have hot tea, we moved on to Grind, just one door down. England used to be a tea-loving nation, and now you can find good coffee everywhere. We waited there until we were cleared to board the platform.
Da es bei Marugame Udon nicht mal einen heißen Tee gab, ziehen wir ein Haus weiter zu Grind. Früher war England die Teenation und heute findet man hier überall guten Kaffee. Hier verbringen wir die Zeit bis zur Freigabe zum Betreten des Bahnsteigs.Über South Western Railways haben wir zwei günstige Tickets für die 1. Klasse erhalten. Man muss aber extrem früh bestellen, wenn man mehrere braucht. Oft sind je Zug nur 6 Tickets in der 1. Klasse buchbar und zuletzt brauchte ich 5 für unsere Reise auf der COSTA DIADEMA im Mai 2026. Deswegen lohnt es sich hier schnell und früh zu sein.
We got two inexpensive first-class tickets through South Western Railways. However, you have to book extremely early if you need more than one. Often, only six first-class tickets are available per train, and I recently needed five for our trip on the COSTA DIADEMA in May 2026. Therefore, it's worth being quick and booking early.
Wir kommen pünktlich in Southampton an. Wir haben Glück: Züge, die aus London ankommen, kommen auf der Seite an, die zum Hafen hin liegt. Für diese Seite bestellen wir über Uber einen Wagen und lassen uns zu unserem Hotel, The Prince Consort, in Netley fahren. Wir waren früher schon mal hier. Nach wenigen Metern kann man hier auf die Solent schauen und so die Schiffe beim Ein- und Auslaufen fotografieren. Es ist nur arschkalt und dieses Mal ohne Auto ist es doch blöd. Wir haben wieder dasselbe Zimmer bekommen. Dieses Mal gefällt es uns jedoch nicht mehr. Die Heizung ist zwar an, aber das alte Gemäuer lässt sich nicht aufheizen. Und unsere Zimmernachbarn lassen die Außentür ständig offenstehen. Für März war nochmals ein Aufenthalt vorgesehen, aber den stornieren wir, weil ich dazu nicht nochmals Lust habe. We arrived in Southampton on time. We were lucky: trains arriving from London arrive on the side of the station facing the harbor. We ordered an Uber and were driven to our hotel, The Prince Consort, in Netley. We'd stayed here before. After just a few meters, you can see the Solent and photograph the ships coming and going. It was cold, though, and it was a real pain not having a car this time. We got the same room again. This time, however, we didn't like it. The heating was on, but the old building wouldn't warm up. And our neighbors kept leaving their front door open. We had planned another stay in March, but we canceled it because I didn't want to go through that again.What's a real shame is that the food here is excellent, and it's a typical English pub experience. But it's too far to drive out here just for the food.
Was dabei sehr schade ist: Essen kann man hier sehr gut und man erlebt hier ein typisches englisches Pub. Aber nur zum Essen hier rauszufahren, ist es zu weit.

Next comes VENTURA 2018 – but without the circus (VENTURA 2008) on the upper deck, I find it very colorless.

Die MSC POESIA 2022 haben wir in sehr guter Erinnerung: Wir waren Silvester schon eine Nacht lang darauf.
We have very fond memories of MSC POESIA 2022: We spent New Year's Eve on board.IONA is the last to leave, but it doesn't really appeal to me. I need to go to bed now. I have to get up early again.
Als Letzte fährt die IONA raus, aber die reizt mich irgendwie gar nicht. Nun muss ich ins Bett. Ich muss ja früh wieder raus.
