Tag/Day 5 auf der/on QUEEN VICTORIA in Katakolon, Greece

Es geht um eine positive Einstellung zum Frühstück. Ich probiere sogar einen Muffin und finde ihn gut.



It's about having a positive attitude towards breakfast. I even tried a muffin and liked it.

We are not the only ones here: the AURORA is also located in Katakolon.



Wir sind hier nicht die Einzigen: Die AURORA liegt auch noch in Katakolon.

Wir waren hier in Katakolon schon viermal zuvor (RYNDAM 2013, NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (1), NORWEGIAN JADE 2021, CELEBRITY REFLECTION 2022). Eigentlich einer der "langweiligsten" Häfen der Welt. In erster Linie für Touren ins antike Olympia. Und der Ort entdeckt nach der Haupteinkaufsstraße bereits. Die Geschäfte schließen bereits, auch wenn noch nicht alle zurück an Bord sind. Wir kommen aber immer wieder gerne hierher zum Essen und zum Fotografieren. Mit dem Auto versuchen wir auch ein wenig abseits der Pfade nach Olympia etwas zu entdecken. Wir waren daher schon mal Zugfahren nach Olympia, wir waren schon mal selbst in Olympia, wir waren schon einfach wandern und wir waren zuletzt in Kalamata auf einer Olivenplantage. Nachdem wir gestern bereits die Restkapazität für die Erfassung historischer Gebäude vollständig erschöpft haben, wird es heute keine Festung, sondern Natur: Wir möchten zum Nemouta-Wasserfall. Auf den Fotos sieht es sehr gut aus. Der Wagen ist bei Dias eh schon bestellt und Petra wartet schon mit dem Auto auf uns. Für sie haben wir auch etwas Lebkuchen aus Deutschland mitgebracht. Es ist nicht viel los. Sie bieten normalerweise auch die Bustransfers nach Olympia an, aber heute nicht: Die Gäste der QUEEN VICTORIA unternehmen private Touren. Die AURORA ist ein Schiff nur für Erwachsene und Briten. Sie begnügen sich damit, dass sie einmal die Hauptstraße rauf- und wieder runterlaufen und wieder an Bord gehen, um bloß keine Mahlzeit zu verpassen. Sie warnt uns davor, dass der Weg dorthin nicht so gut sein könnte und wir etwas mehr Zeit einplanen sollten. Google behauptet in einem Fall, dass es 31 Minuten dauert, aber auch, dass es 1:09 Stunden dauern könnte. Das liegt daran, dass Google ungeprüfte Ortsmeldungen einträgt. D.h. jemand hat den Ort Nemouta Wasserfall eintragen lassen, sodass Google 31 Minuten bis dahin berechnet. Und ein anderer hat den gleichen Ort woanders eintragen lassen und dafür von Google 1:09 Stunden berechnet. Nun, beide haben leider Unrecht: Der 31 Minuten entfernte stimmt gar nicht. Und der 1:09-Stunden-Entfernte ist über die normale Straße nicht erreichbar. Dafür braucht man schon einen Jeep. Nur unser TomTom hatte mal wieder recht, weil er uns gar nicht bis zum Wasserfall führen konnte, sondern davon ausging, dass wir ca. 2 km zuvor bereits nicht mehr fahren konnten.



We've been to Katakolon four times before (RYNDAM 2013, NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (1), NORWEGIAN JADE 2021, CELEBRITY REFLECTION 2022). It's actually one of the "most boring" ports in the world. The port is mainly popular for tours to ancient Olympia. After the main shopping street, the place is already bustling. The shops are already closing, even if not everyone is back on board yet. But we always enjoy coming back for food and photography. We also try to explore a bit off the beaten path by car. We've already taken the train to Olympia and visited the site. We've also gone hiking, and most recently, visited an olive grove in Kalamata. We completely exhausted our capacity for recording historical buildings yesterday. So today, it won't be a fortress, but nature. We want to go to the Nemouta Waterfall. It looks very good in the photos. The car is already booked with Dias, and Petra is waiting with the car. We also brought her some gingerbread from Germany. It's not very busy. They usually offer bus transfers to Olympia, but not today. The guests of QUEEN VICTORIA are taking private tours. AURORA is an adults-only ship for British passengers. The guests are content to walk the main street once, then get back on board so as not to miss a meal. Petra warns us that the road there might not be in good condition and suggests we allow extra time. Google claims that, depending on the entry, it takes either 31 minutes or 1 hour and 9 minutes. This is because Google uses unverified location information. For example, someone entered the location "Nemouta Waterfall," so Google estimates 31 minutes to get there. Someone else entered the same location elsewhere, and Google calculates 1 hour and 9 minutes for that. Unfortunately, both are wrong. The one that says 31 minutes away is completely wrong. The other, 1 hour and 9 minutes away, isn't accessible by regular road; you need a Jeep for that. Only our TomTom was right again. It couldn't guide us all the way, but it showed we couldn't drive for about 2 km before the waterfall.

The journey is the destination: Along the way, we were treated to a beautiful, varied landscape and a lovely blue sky. Two kilometers from our destination, TomTom indicated the end of the route. This also marked the end of the paved road (with potholes – but certainly not an old Roman road!). We continued driving even without asphalt. Google said it was possible. When we were about 1 km from our destination, we faced the choice of either parking in the middle of the road and walking 1 km steeply downhill (without hiking gear) or turning back, as only a muddy track lay ahead. Since we had no good cell phone signal and weren't sure if our Europe-wide ADAC breakdown cover would apply here, we decided to test the car's turning radius and Bruno's driving skills. We managed to turn the car around centimeter by centimeter, practically while standing still, without getting stuck in the mud or sliding down the steep slope. We made it back up to civilization. Later, we learned that it had apparently stopped raining on the coast earlier, but it continued to rain inland for days. That's why the roads in Katakolon looked so good, and here, surrounded by lush greenery, we now understand why it's so green. There was a gas station at the junction, and we asked if there was another way. We were told that this was the only way. Oh well: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The waterfall will still be there when we come back to Katakolon. We also stopped at a beautiful Orthodox chapel along the way.



Der Weg ist das Ziel: Unterwegs erwartet uns eine wunderschöne, abwechslungsreiche Landschaft und ein schöner blauer Himmel. Zwei Kilometer vor dem Ziel zeigte uns TomTom das Ende der Wegführung an. Das war auch das Ende der asphaltierten Straße (mit Schlaglöcher - aber keinesfalls eine alte Römerstraße!). Wir fahren auch ohne Asphalt weiter. Google sagt, dass es möglich ist. Als wir dann ca. 1 km vor dem Ziel waren, hieß es entweder, mitten auf dem Weg zu parken und 1 km steil runterzulaufen (ohne Wanderausrüstung) oder die Weiterfahrt abzubrechen, weil nur noch eine Schlammpiste vor uns war. Da wir kein gutes Mobilfunksignal hatten und nicht wussten ob hier auch unser europaweiter ADAC-Schutzbrief hier greift, entscheiden wir uns zu testen, wie gut der Wendekreis des Autos und Brunos Fahrkünste sind. Uns gelingt es quasi im Stehen Zentimeter für Zentimeter das Auto zu wenden, ohne dass wir im Schlamm steckenbleiben oder den Steilhang abrutschen. Wir schaffen es wieder in die Zivilisation hochzufahren. Später erfahren wir, dass es wohl an der Küste bereits zuvor aufgehört hatte zu regnen, aber es im Landesinneren tagelang weiterregnete. Deswegen sahen die Straßen in Katakolon gut aus, und hier mitten in der grünen Natur wissen wir jetzt auch, warum es so grün ist. An der Abzweigung stand eine Tankstelle, und wir fragen nach, ob es noch einen anderen Weg dahin gibt. Uns sagt man, dass nur dieser Weg dahin führt. Nun gut: Mal gewinnt man, mal verliert man. Der Wasserfall wird auch noch da sein, wenn wir wieder mal nach Katakolon kommen. Unterwegs war ja noch eine schöne orthodoxe Kapelle, an der wir hielten.

Weder auf Mykonos noch in Athen habe ich es geschafft Souvlaki zu essen. Aber hier in Katakolon kenne ich eine sichere Adresse für ein tolles Souvlaki. Wir essen wieder bei Jimmy's. Es liegt nicht direkt an der Strandpromenade in Katakolon. Hier gibt es das beste Souvlaki für wenig Geld. Man zahlt hier eben nicht für einen Blick aufs Meer, sondern nur für gutes Essen und freundlichen Service. Hier treffen wir auch unseren Kabinensteward Ephrahim und seine Kollegen, die wissen, dass man hier für wenig Geld sehr gut essen kann. Für die Kollegen, die nicht an Land dürfen, weil sie Dienst haben, werden jede Menge Care-Pakete aus der Taverne mitgenommen, um deren Überleben an Bord zu sichern. Sie sind übrigens ein Haus weitergezogen und haben sich vergrößert. Als wir kommen, ist alles voll, aber als sie uns sehen, sollen wir ja nicht weglaufen. Der nächste Tisch gehört uns. Hier gibt es auch die griechische Limonade Loux. Ich war zuvor in einem griechischen Supermarkt und hatte dort einen Sixpack gekauft. Die Kassierin hat mich sehr gelobt, weil ich wohl die beste Limonade der Welt gekauft habe. Wenn wir mit dem Auto von Barcelona nach Hause gefahren wären: ich hätte vermutlich nicht nur ein Sixpack gekauft, sondern einen ganzen Kofferraum voll. Nun kann ich in Frieden Griechenland verlassen: Ich habe mein Souvlaki bekommen und bin jetzt glücklich.



Neither in Mykonos nor in Athens did I manage to eat souvlaki. But here in Katakolon, I know a sure place for great souvlaki. We're eating at Jimmy's again. It's not directly on the beach promenade in Katakolon. They have the best souvlaki for very little money. You're not paying for a sea view here, just for good food and friendly service. We also meet our cabin steward, Ephrahim, and his colleagues here, who know that you can eat very well here for very little money. For the colleagues who aren't allowed ashore because they're on duty, they take loads of care packages from the taverna to ensure their survival on board. By the way, they've moved to a bigger place. When we arrive, it's packed, but when they see us, they tell us not to run away. The next table is ours. They also have Loux, a Greek lemonade. I had been to a Greek supermarket earlier and bought a six-pack there. The cashier praised me highly, saying I'd bought the best lemonade in the world. If we'd driven home from Barcelona, I probably would have bought not just a six-pack, but a whole trunkful. Now I can leave Greece in peace: I got my souvlaki and I'm happy.

If the weather is nice, we won't leave Katakolon until we've had coffee on Meltemi's terrace at the top of the hill. They know us there already.



Wenn schönes Wetter ist, dann wird Katakolon auch nicht verlassen, bevor wir auf der Terrasse von Meltemi oben auf dem Hügel kaffeetrinken. Auch hier kennt man uns schon.

Von hier hat man den schönsten Ausblick auf die QUEEN VICTORIA (und auch auf die AURORA). Die Chance lasse ich mir ja nicht entgehen, um von hier oben zu fotografieren. Schon gar nicht, bei diesem Wetter.

As we leave Katakolon, we sail towards the sunset. I'm so looking forward to two days at sea.



Als wir Katakolon verlassen, fahren wir dem Sonnenuntergang entgegen. Was freue ich mich auf zwei Seetage.

Auf dem Weg zum Abendessen begegnen wir wieder zwei Crewmitgliedern, die wir von unseren früheren Fahrten her kennen: Ruffel und Jonathan.



On our way to dinner, we meet two crew members again, whom we know from our previous trips: Ruffel and Jonathan.

The evening ends back in the lobby: Andrew Scott is performing down here again. Apparently, there's a couple on board staging a performance – she later introduces herself as a content creator. She's wearing a hanbok (a traditional Korean dress). For one day, they're both dressed as if we were living in the Roaring Twenties. He's in a soldier's uniform. Each in their own way, trying to stand out at any cost.



Der Abend endet wieder in der Lobby: Andrew Scott spielt hier unten wieder. Anscheinend ist ein Pärchen an Bord, das sich selbst inszeniert – es stellt sich später als Content-Creatorin vor. Sie trägt einen Hanbok (ein traditionelles koreanisches Kleid). Einen Tag sind beide angezogen, als würden wir in den goldenen Zwanzigern leben. Er in einer Soldatenuniform. Jeder nach seiner Fassung und um jeden Preis auffallen.
