Tag/Day 0.B. auf dem Weg zur/on the way to QUEEN VICTORIA in Istanbul, Turkey

Mit Uber geht es nach Kabatas. Der perfekte Ort für einen Shipspotter. Und ein perfekter Ort, um die schlafende Stadt zu sehen.



I'm taking an Uber to Kabatas. The perfect place for a ship spotter. And a perfect place to see the sleeping city.

First, MEIN SCHIFF 5 arrives. It's a shame that both the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace are so dimly lit. Otherwise, I could have taken some fantastic pictures.



Zunächst läuft die MEIN SCHIFF 5 ein. Schade, dass sowohl die Hagia Sophia als auch der Topkapi-Palast so schwach beleuchtet sind. Sonst hätte ich jetzt ganz tolle Bilder aufnehmen können.

Danach folgt die QUEEN VICTORIA. Sie hat einen Übernachtaufenthalt. Da sie sich zunächst wendet, kann ich schon unsere Kabine sehen.



Next comes QUEEN VICTORIA. She's staying overnight. Since she's turning around first, I can already see our cabin.

And then the city awakens. I witnessed a beautiful sunrise. I had imagined the city to be much louder.



Und dann erwacht die Stadt. Ich erlebe einen wunderschönen Sonnenaufgang. Ich hätte mir die Stadt dabei weitaus lauter vorgestellt.

Es geht zurück ins Hotel zum Frühstück. Sehr gut sind die gleichen Bestellzettel am Platz. So braucht sich niemand anzustellen. Sehr lecker ist der türkische Cecil-Weichkäse. Vielleicht bekomme ich ihn ja in Klein-Istanbul in Mannheim. Und die Köfte im Teigmantel schmeckten super. Leider gab es sie am nächsten Morgen nicht mehr.



Back to the hotel for breakfast. The order slips at the table are a great feature, as no one has to queue. The Turkish Cecil soft cheese is delicious. Perhaps I can find it in Mannheim's "Little Istanbul." And the köfte in pastry were fantastic. Unfortunately, they weren't available the next morning.

Instead of taking the funicular, we walk down to Beşiktaş Stadium.



Statt die Standseilbahn zu nehmen, laufen wir runter zu Beşiktaş-Stadion.

Von hier nehmen wir die Straßenbahn nach Sirkeci. Der Bahnhof Sirkeci wird immer noch umgebaut. Von hier fuhr früher der Orient-Express ab. Mit der Fähre ging es weiter nach Haydapasar auf den asiatischen Teil. Aber heute gibt es einen Tunnel und der Orient-Express fährt nicht mehr von hier.



From here, we take the tram to Sirkeci. Sirkeci station is still being renovated. The Orient Express used to depart from here, and passengers could then take a ferry to Haydarpasa on the Asian side. But now there's a tunnel, and the Orient Express no longer runs from here.



Heute gehen wir mal ins Café von Hafiz Mustafa. Als wir das letzte Mal mit der NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (1) hier waren, haben wir nur den Laden besucht, aber nicht das Café oben drüber. Es ist schon wie ein Schlaraffenland.



Today we're going to Hafiz Mustafa's café. The last time we were here with NORWEGIAN JADE 2014 (1), we only visited the shop, but not the café upstairs. It's like a land of plenty.

When we leave, the world in Istanbul has changed. The tram isn't running anymore. And more and more people are arriving with placards and Palestinian flags. Since nothing is running here, we try to catch another subway. By chance, we walk past the Spice Bazaar. It's open. The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays. So we look around and find what we're looking for.



Als wir wieder herausgehen, hat sich die Welt in Istanbul verändert. Die Straßenbahn fährt nicht mehr. Und immer mehr Menschen kommen mit Plakaten und Palästina-Flaggen. Da hier nichts mehr fährt, versuchen wir eine andere U-Bahn zu erreichen. Zufällig laufen wir dabei am Gewürzbasar vorbei. Der ist geöffnet. Der Große Basar ist sonntags geschlossen. Und so sehen wir uns darin um und finden auch das, wonach wir suchen.

Seit der Reise auf der AZAMARA QUEST 2024 habe ich Seifen als Mitbringel entdeckt: Für Magnete haben wir keinen Platz mehr auf unserem Kühlschrank. Seifen werden aufgebraucht. Und daher kann man sie immer wieder kaufen. Last not least: kein Mikroplastik mehr in Plastikflaschen. Und vor allem meinem Haar und meiner Haut bekommt es besser. Mal gucken, ob die türkischen besser sind als die Marseiller, die aus Aleppo, Nablus oder griechischen Seifen.



Since my trip on AZAMARA QUEST 2024, I've discovered soap as a great souvenir: We no longer have room for magnets on our fridge. Soap gets used up, so you can always buy it again. Last but not least: no more microplastics in plastic bottles. And above all, it's better for my hair and skin. Let's see if the Turkish ones are better than the Marseille soaps, the Aleppo or Nablus soaps, or the Greek soaps.



Als wir aus dem Basar wieder herauskamen, hatten sich hier Sicherheitskräfte und Demonstranten versammelt. Wir gucken lieber zu, damit wir wegkommen.



When we came out of the bazaar, security forces and demonstrators had gathered. We decided to just watch so we could leave.





We'll take an Uber back to the hotel. Better safe than sorry. We'll have a light lunch here.



Mit Uber fahren wir ins Hotel zurück. Sicher ist sicher. Wir essen hier eine Kleinigkeit zu Mittag.





Später ist Tea-Time.

We booked a sunset Bosphorus cruise on a yacht with Velena Travel. I really appreciated that they didn't try to sell us a carpet or gold. On the contrary, the service was very friendly and attentive. Water, juice, tea, and fruit were provided, so we were happy to tip them at the end. First, we sailed towards the Black Sea.



Mit Velena Travel haben wir eine Bosporus-Fahrt zum Sonnenuntergang auf einem Yacht gebucht. Mir gefällt es sehr gut, dass sie nicht versucht haben, uns einen Teppich oder Gold zu verkaufen. Im Gegenteil: sehr freundlicher und aufmerksamer Service. Es gibt Wasser, Saft, Tee und Obst. Daher haben wir denen auch gerne am Schluss Trinkgeld gegeben. Zunächst fahren in Richtung Schwarzes Meer.

Dann geht es der Sonne entgegen. Wir fahren auf die MEIN SCHIFF 5 und die QUEEN VICTORIA zu. Aber im Gegenlicht kann man kaum etwas erkennen. Wir fahren bis zur Galatabrücke und drehen dann wieder nach Kabatas. Dort ist alles wieder normal. Die Demonstrationen sind friedlich zu Ende gegangen. Der normale Verkehr rollt wieder.



Then we head towards the sun. We sail towards MEIN SCHIFF 5 and QUEEN VICTORIA. But in the glare, it's hard to see anything. We sail as far as the Galata Bridge and then turn back towards Kabatas. There, everything is back to normal. The demonstrations have ended peacefully. Normal traffic is flowing again.

We ate at the Sultan Kebap & Fish restaurant near the hotel. Bruno was thrilled with the freshly grilled fish, and I tried my favorite dish Iskender Kebap from Mannheim's "Little Istanbul" in the larger Istanbul.
