Seetag/Day at Sea 2 auf der/on QUEEN MARY 2

Wir sind auf einer anspruchsvollen Kreuzfahrt: New York Times Leserreise mit vielen Lektoren, die die New York Times stellt. Für die Leserreise gibt es noch zusätzliche Veranstaltungen an Bord, die nicht öffentlich angeboten werden. Der Preis der Reise war auch um einiges höher. Auch ist ja immer Cunard Insights sehr gut, um eben mehr über die Geschichte Cunards und die Cunard-Flotte zu erfahren. Alles kommt auf einem großen Zettel. Am Schluss ist der Zettel so voll: im Büro zu bleiben, hätte weniger Stress bedeutet...



We were on an ambitious cruise: New York Times Times-Journey with many lectors which were sent by New York Times. For the Times-Journey there were many more events on board which were not offered to the public. The price for that voyage was much more. Cunard Insights was normally also very good to learn more on of the history of Cunard and the Cunard-fleet. Everything went to a large sheet paper. At the end the paper was so full: staying in the office would have meant less stress...

Ich versehe nicht so ganz, warum sollte man nach der Ausschiffung Gepäck bei Cunard in Southampton lagern sollen. Warum sollte jemand sein Gepäck bis zum nächsten Anlauf der QUEEN MARY 2 am 08.05.2017 lagern wollen?



I did no know properly why you should store your bags with Cunard in Southampton after disembarkation. Why should someone store the bag until the next port call of QUEEN MARY 2 on May 08, 2017?

Ein Muss: wenn Joy an Bord ist, muss ich sie besuchen und sie grüßen. Sie war auf der Fahrt QUEEN MARY 2 2014 wie eine 2. Mutter zu mir. Aber auch mit unserem Kabinensteward Jose sind wir sehr zufrieden. Wir bekommen zu viel Post... Bei der Einladung zum Deutschsprachigen Kaffeemorgen hätte es mir auffallen müssen... Genauso gut hätte da Zmorge stehen können. In Deutschland würden wir ja wohl mehr Morgenkaffee sagen. Nur die Einladung zur Weinprobe ist etwas, womit wir nichts anfangen können. Und die deutschen Nachrichten brauchen wir auch nicht. Wir sind weit weit weg.



A must: when Joy was onboard I need to see and greet her. She was on my journey QUEEN MARY 2 2014 like a 2nd mother to me. But we were also very satisfied with our cabin steward Jose. We got a lot of mail... Also an invitation for a German-speaking meeting for a morning coffee. Only the invitation for the winetasting it was nothing we could really deal with. And no need to have German news. We were far far away.

From our sailing on DIAMOND PRINCESS 2016 I was used to go nearly every morning at 05.30 hrs for some rounds Aqua-Jogging. But my intentions were abruptly stopped because the pool was still covered. And it was opened very long time later.



Von der DIAMOND PRINCESS 2016 war ich es gewohnt fast jeden Morgen um 05.30 Uhr meine Runden Aqua-Jogging zu machen. Aber hier werden meine guten Vorsätze jäh gestoppt, weil das Becken noch abgedeckt ist. Erst sehr viel später wird es geöffnet.

Im Schiff sehe ich mich um, ob sich sehr viel verändert hat. Der Brückenbeobachtungsraum ist noch geschlossen. Viele verhalten sich wie in einem billigen amerikanischen Hotel und stellen ihr dreckiges Geschirr vom Kabinenservice vor die Tür, statt einfach den Kabinenservice anzurufen. Einige bekommen erst jetzt ihr Gepäck. Und ich lerne den Mann kennen, der für die tollen Blumenarrangements zuständig ist: Mikee.



I was looking around the ship if there were a lot of changes. The bridge observation room was still closed. Many were behaving like in a cheap American hotel and just placed their dirty dish of the cabin service in front of the door but calling the cabin service to collect. Some got now their bags. I made aquaintance of the man who was in charge for all the great flower arrangements: Mikee.

In the King's Court I need to find out what they offered for breakfast. I treated myself with a small English breakffast. I need to get silverware, napkin and hot beverage by myself. Should not there be a new service concept after the refit? I was feeling quite well there because in the background they had great music playing: like the German popular song "Hör gut zu" (Listen very carefully) by the German Bank Pur which I totally lost out of my mind for many years. I need to download this song immediately because it made me feeling really well.



Ich muss mir im King's Court einen Überblick über das Frühstücksangebot verschaffen. Ein kleines englisches Frühstück gönne ich mir. Besteck, Serviette und Heißgetränk muss ich mir selbst holen. Sollte es nicht ein neues Servicekonzept nach dem Umbau geben? Ich fühle mich aber sehr wohl, weil im Hintergrund tolle Musik läuft: u. a. von Pur "Hör gut zu", das ich wirklich für viele Jahre aus dem Gedächtnis gedrängt hatte. Ich muss mir sofort das Lied herunterladen, weil ich mich einfach richtig wohl fühle.

Die wichtigste Person im King's Court bzw. besser Chef's Galley ist Gerhald, der jeden Morgen tolle frisch gepresste Säfte macht. Die sind richtig lecker und gesund. Er variiert jeden Morgen die Zusammensetzung.



The most important person in the King's Court or better in the Chef's Galley was Gerhalt who made every morning fresh juices. They were yummy and healthy. He was varying every morning the ingredients.

We went to the Britiannia-Restaurant for our first breakfast on board. The fruit plate was arranged nicer before.



Wir gehen ins Britannia-Restaurant zum 1. Frühstück an Bord. Der Obstteller war aber schon mal schöner arrangiert.

Die Einreisekontrolle für Großbritannien findet bereits an Bord statt. Wir sind heute dran.



The immigration control for UK were conducted onboard. It was our turn that day.

In the upper part of the restaurant they started already with it.



Im oberen Teil des Restaurants hat sie bereits damit angefangen.

Im Sir Samuel's hat sich einiges verändert. Godiva vertreibt jetzt Schokoladenspezialitäten gegen Bezahlung. Gibt es fast in jedem Shopping Mall auf der ganzen Welt. Deswegen ziehen wir Dumon oder Neuhaus (Belgischer Hoflieferant) vor, wenn es sich um belgische Schokolade handelt. Die kostenlosen Häppchen gibt es jetzt oben in der Carinthia Lounge. Ich freue mich James wieder zu treffen, den ich von den letzten zwei Reisen auf der QUEEN MARY 2 2014 und QUEEN MARY 2 2015 her kenne. Während wir hier beim leckeren Cappucino sitzen, stelle ich fest: drei Punkte von der Liste habe ich bereits verpasst.



Some changes with Sir Samuel's. Godiva was distributing chocolate specialities against payment. You could get it in nearly every shopping mall in the world. That was why prefered more Dumon or Neuhaus (appointed supplier of the Belgian Royal Court) when we were talking of Belgian chocolate. The complimentary small bites you could get now upstairs in the Carinthia Lounge. I was looking forward to meet James again whom I remember from my last two voyages on QUEEN MARY 2 2014 and QUEEN MARY 2 2015. While we were sitting and having our yummy Cappucino I missed already three items from my list.

We went to the former Todd English - it was formed now to The Verandah. We went to The Verandah on QUEEN ELIZABETH 2012 and I did not really like it then. The menu did not appeal to me. Too extravagant. I did not like to eat neither frog legs nor venison tartare. I wanted to have my flat bread, mein salad, my lamb kebab and my mango sherbet and you could call me the most happy man on the whole ship. Beside the fact that he variation FOR ME was less you had to pay double as much for The Verandah as you did before with Todd English. Todd English used "normal" ingredients which you can easy buy on a farmer's market or in a better supermarket. I did not forget the pigeon in chocolate sauce until today. I never want to have it again. But I liked to remember very well our vistis with Todd English on QUEEN VICTORIA 2008, QUEEN MARY 2 2011, QUEEN MARY 2 2014 and QUEEN MARY 2 2015. In front of the restaurant we discovered Christoph and Karl who was walking around.



Wir gehen in das ehemalige Todd English - heute ist es The Verandah. Wir waren in The Verandah schon mal auf der QUEEN ELIZABETH 2012 drin und es hatte mir damals nicht so gut gefallen. Die Speisekarte spricht mich auch nicht an. Zu extravagant. Ich mag nun mal weder Froschschenkel essen noch Wildtartar. Ich möchte mein Fladenbrot, meinen Salat, mein Lammkebab und mein Mango-Sorbet und damit wäre ich vermutlich allerglücklichste Mensch auf dem ganzen Schiff gewesen. Abgesehen davon ist die Auswahl FÜR MICH der Gerichte weniger und die Zuzahlung ist jetzt in The Verandah etwa doppelt so hoch wie zuvor bei Todd English. Todd English hat ja durchaus "normale" Zutaten verarbeitet, die man auf jedem Wochenmarkt und jedem besseren Supermarkt findet. Die Taube mit Schokoladensauce habe ich bis heute noch nicht vergessen. Ich möchte sie nie wieder haben. Aber ich denke sehr gerne an unsere Besuche im Todd English auf der QUEEN VICTORIA 2008, QUEEN MARY 2 2011, QUEEN MARY 2 2014 und QUEEN MARY 2 2015 zurück. Vor dem Restaurant entdecken wir Christoph und Karl, die hier herumlaufen.

Weiter geht es zum Mittagessen. Alle Punkte, die vormittags auf der Liste standen, sind gestrichen. Wir treffen hier im Britannia Restaurant auf Liviu, den wir von der QUEEN MARY 2 2015 kennen. Es gibt wieder leckeres indisches Essen.



We headed for lunch. Every item on my list for the morning was canceled. We met here in the Britannia Restaurant to Liviu whom we knew from QUEEN MARY 2 2015. We had again yummy Indian food.

We met in the Carinthia Lounge Anna, the favorite waitress of Nils (co-worker of Sigi and cruise-enthusiast like us. We went togehter on DELPHIN 2009 without knowing each other) and we had to look for her on QUEEN MARY 2 2015 to let her have his regards.



Wir treffen in der Carinthia Lounge auf Anna, die Lieblingskellnerin von Nils (Kollege von Sigi und begeisterter Kreuzfahrer wie wir. Wir waren gemeinsam auf der DELPHIN 2009, aber kannten uns nicht persönlich), die wir auf der QUEEN MARY 2 2015 suchen mussten, um sie von ihm zu grüßen.

"The House at the Bridge: A Story of Modern Germany" (Gemeint war ein Gebäude an der Glienicker Brücke, die Berlin und Potsdam verbindet) von der New York Times-Lektorin Katie Haffner. Ich wollte zu dem Vortrag. Etwas versetzt findet das Meet & Greet mit cruisecritic.com statt. Beides verpasse ich, weil ich vergessen, die Uhr mittags von 12.00 Uhr auf 13.00 Uhr umzustellen. Schade zwar, aber ich habe ja Urlaub und ärgere mich nicht weiter. Den Vortrag hätte ich später auch im Bordfernsehen sehen können, aber ich habe auch das verpasst.



"The House at the Bridge: A Story of Modern Germany" of the New York Times-speaker Katie Haffner. I wanted to attent the lecture. A little time-shifted there was the Meet & Greet of cruisecritic.com. I missed both because I forgot to set my clock from 12.00 hrs to 13.00 hrs. It was sad but I was on vacation and was not upset with myself anymore. I could see the lecture later on the board-TV but I missed even that.

The internet was running on high seas worse than expected.



Das Internet läuft dann auf hoher See doch unterwegs schlechter, als erwartet.

Probleme bereitet das Abmelden. Hier sind wird Dauergäste beim Internet-Manager und lassen uns die Minuten wieder gut schreiben.



You had problems to sign-off. So we became permanent guests of the Internet-Manager and got the minutes credited.

I went quickly to the doctor because I need some medication.



Ich gehe mal kurz zum Arzt, weil ich Medikamente benötige.

Bewusst gehe ich früher hin, um als erster dran zu kommen. Aber ich habe ja "Hör gut zu" von Pur auf mein iPhone geladen. Es läuft während ich warte in einer Endlosschleife. Mir ging es gut.



I went there intentionally to be the first who could get it. But I downloaded "Hör gut zu" of Pur before on my iPhone. It was playing in an endless loop while I was waiting. I had a good time.

Due to lack of cortizon as injection on board I got codein. For 106.00 USD incl. consultation of the doctor. It did not help.



Mangels Cortison als Injektion an Bord, bekomme ich Codein. Für 106.00 USD inkl. Arztbesuch. Geholfen hat es allerdings nichts.

I came late to the Friends of Dorothy-Meeting. I estimate around 40-50 men were there! Not like last time when I was more or less by myself.



Zum Friends of Dorothy-Treffen komme ich zu spät. Es sind geschätzt 40-50 Männer da! Nicht wie beim letzten Mal, wo ich mehr oder minder alleine war.

Ich freue mich sehr über das Wiedersehen mit Raj, Miguel, Sachin, Marco und Svitlana, die ich von meinen bisheringen Reisen auf der QUEEN MARY 2 2014 und QUEEN MARY 2 2015 her kenne.

Neben The Verandah gibt es noch ein weiteres Alternativangebot gegen Zuzahlung. Es wechselt thematisch: am 1. Abend war Aztec (mexikanisch): haben wir verpasst und das gibt es auch nur ein mal. Alle anderen Abende gibt es zweimal. Bamboo (asiatisch - hatte ich ja erst "neulich" auf der QUEEN MARY 2 2014 - aber da war es noch Lotus) und zweimal Smokehouse (neues Angebot). Das italienisches Angebot gibt es nicht mehr.



Expect The Verandah you had more alternative dining for charge. It changed the theme: the 1st night it was Aztec (Mexican): we missed it and you only had it once. All other nights you had twice. Bamboo (Asian - I had it "recently" on QUEEN MARY 2 2014. But then it was Lotus) and twice Smokehouse (new offer). No Italian offer anymore.

Coriander on QUEEN VICTORIA 2016 was very fascinating to us. That was why wanted to come back here. Unfortunately the concept was changed. As we were five guests they were able to reactivate the concept: we could try everything. Everything was very good. But on QUEEN VICTORIA it was somehow a little better. Only the dessert could not make us exiting. The great crew-members I will introduce another day.



Coriander hatte uns auf der QUEEN VICTORIA 2016 fasziniert. Deswegen wollen wir unbedingt wieder hierher. Leider wurde das Konzept geändert. Da wir aber fünf Gäste sind, konnte man für uns das Konzept quasi reaktiveren: wir haben nämlich alles probiert. Alles ist sehr gut. Damals auf der QUEEN VICTORIA fand ich es noch besser. Nur die Nachspeisen können uns nicht begeistern. Die tollen Crew-Mitglieder stelle ich an einem anderen Tag vor.

Wir gehen noch zu den Opera Boys (nur 2 von 4 sind auf der Bühne), die von Jo Haley vorgestellt werden. Ich bin aber abends immer noch so müde, dass ich nicht so aufmerksam der Aufführung folgen kann.



We went to the Opera Boys (only 2 of 4 appeared on stage) which were introduced by Jo Haley. I was that night already so tired that I was not able to give the performance my full attention.

I went quickly with the others to the Queen's Room to see the opening waltz of the Royal Cunard Dancers. But I was unable to stay longer awake and let the others stay in the Queen's Room by themselves. I prefered to wake up early. Good Night.



In den Queen's Room zum Eröffnungswalzer der Royal Cunard Dancers gehe ich noch kurz mit. Aber sehr viel länger schaffe ich es nicht mehr auf zu bleiben und überlassen den Queen's Room den anderen. Ich stehe nun mal lieber früher auf. Gute Nacht.
