Tag/Day 1 auf der/on QUEEN VICTORIA in Hamburg, Germany

Als erstes Schiff des Tages kommt MEINE QUEEN VICTORIA rein.



As the first schip of the day MY QUEEN VICTORIA came in.

After two years I had luck again to find a mini-cruise precisely over my birthday. That time with a day at sea. But it appeared too expensive to me: For 540 USD per person, it was not worth. In Germany, they charged around 490 EUR per person and also in the UK it was 439 GBP per person. One time I forgot to turn on my US-VPN-Access and promptly I was redirected due to Geo Redirection to the Swiss website of InterConnect Marketing, Munich, Germany, who was in charge for the sales of Cunard in Switzerland. And they had a price of 625 CHF for the cabin of two (= 625 USD). With such price (Balcony with obstructed view) I could not say no and had to book immediately. As the executive travel agent, I selected Pink Travel, Basle, Switzerland because I thought it was a gay travel agent. The owner Jasmina Stajic explained that pink was just her favorite color. She later sent me the documents which were those I could download by myself. As a birthday present, I got a small upgrade to a balcony without an obstruction. The only which did not work: Bruno was already on our last voyage on QUEEN MARY 2 2017 already a Platinum member and he would be again on our next voyage on QUEEN MARY 2 too. But for this voyage, he was "only" Gold. And they confirmed that he should be Platinum - but they could not get the error out of the booking anymore.



Nach zwei Jahren habe ich Glück, dass ich mal wieder genau über meinen Geburtstag eine Mini-Kreuzfahrt habe. Dieses Mal mit einem Seetag. Allerdings empfand ich sie als zu teuer: 540 USD pro Person ist mir das nicht Wert. In Deutschland wären es 490 EUR pro Person und auch in Großbritannien wären es 439 GBP pro Persongewesen. Einmal habe ich allerdings vergessen meinen US-VPN-Zugang einzuschalten und prompt landete ich aufgrund des Geo Redirection auf der schweizerischen Seite von InterConnect Marketing, München, die für den Vertrieb von Cunard in der Schweiz zuständig sind umgeleitet. Und da gab es die Kabine für zwei zum Preis von 625 CHF. Bei so einem Preis (Balkonkabine mit Sichteinschränkung) kann ich nicht nein sagen und habe gebucht. Als ausführendes Reisebüro habe ich dann Pink Travel in Basel ausgewählt, weil ich dachte, dass es ein schwules Reisebüro sei. Die Inhaberin Jasmina Stajic erklärt mir jedoch, dass Pink einfach ihre Lieblingsfarbe ist. Sie schickt uns später auch die Unterlagen zu, die wir auch selbst herunterladen konnten. Als kleines Geburtstagsgeschenk bekomme ich ein Upgrade zu einer Balkonkabine ohne Sichteinschränkung. Das einzige, das nicht klappt: Bruno war auf der letzten Reise auf der QUEEN MARY 2 2017 bereits Platin-Mitglied und bei der nächsten Reise auf der QUEEN MARY 2 auch. Bloß jetzt ist er "nur" Gold. Ich habe es gemeldet. Und sie haben es mir bestätigt, dass er eigentlich Platin ist - nur den Fehler bekommen sie aus der Buchung nicht mehr raus.

Bevor ich wieder ins Bett kann, kommt noch AIDAvita rein.



Before I could return to my bed AIDAvita came in.

We went for breakfast. Actually nice. Apart the apple juice from the "Old Country" (Altes Land - Germany largest fruit farming area) I was missing typical Northern German items like "Fleischsalat" (Diced Pork Sausage Salad with cucumber pickles and mayonnaise), "Schweinebraten mit Gelee" (Pork Roast with jelly sauce) and "Mettwurst" (minced pork sausage)... With sparkling wine for breakfast, you could not impress me too much.



Es geht zum Frühstück. Eigentlich ganz nett. Bis auf den Apfelsaft vom Alten Land vermisse ich jedoch typisch norddeutsche Elemente im Angebot: Fleischsalat, Schweinebraten mit Gelee, Mettwurst... Mit Prosecco zum Frühstück kann man mich nicht begeistern.

Wir fahren kurz nach Cuxhaven um Brunos Eltern dort für ein paar Tage abzusetzen, damit sie ein wenig Seeluft schnappen können. Das Hotel ist in der Nähe der Kugelbake. Wir zeigen ihnen, wie sie dahin kommen und wann wir heute Nacht mit der QUEEN VICTORIA durchfahren. Sie wollen jedoch partout uns nicht versprechen, dass sie heute Nacht dort hinlaufen, um Bilder von uns zu machen.



We went to Cuxhaven, Germany to drop off Bruno's parents for a few days breathing fresh sea air. The hotel was close to the "Kugelbake" historical marine traffic sign. We showed them how to get there and when we would pass on QUEEN VICTORIA tonight. They refused for sure to walk that night there to take pictures of us.

The "Kugelbake" separated the outer part of the river Elbe from the lower part. It was the end of the river and the beginning of the North Sea. It was separating the mouth of the river Weser from the mouth of the river Elbe.



Die Kugelbake trennt die Außenelbe von der Unterelbe. Sie ist das Ende der Elbe und der Anfang der Nordsee. Sie ist die Grenze zwischen dem Wesermündegebiete und dem Elbemündegebiet.

Es ist jedoch zu kalt, so dass nicht mal ich Lust habe, bis dahin zu laufen, um Bilder zu machen.



It was so cold that even me was not interested to walk there to take pictures.

But we could follow how close QUEEN VICTORIA passed by.



Dabei können wir sehen, wie nahe QUEEN VICTORIA tatsächlich daran vorbei kommt.

Vielleicht ist das hier ja auch für später mal ein guter Platz zum Shipspotten.

We need to return immediately since we had 14:30 hrs printed on our tickets as time slot of embarkation. Bruno could imagine what might happen: we were Platinium, so I was not very worried: first we need to go to Altona Cruise Terminal for AIDAvita.



Wir müssen auch sofort zurückfahren, da auf unserem Ticket 14:30 Uhr als Einschiffungszeit steht. Bruno ahnt schon, was ihm droht: Wir sind Platinum und mir ist das eh egal: es geht erst zum Cruise Terminal Altona zur AIDAvita.

Aber gute Bilder entstehen leider nicht, weil ich vernünftig genug bin, nicht auch noch mit der Fähre zu fahren.

Ein paar Kompromisse muss man im Leben eingehen.

Allerdings, wenn es die AIDAmar gewesen wäre..., dann wäre es wieder etwas anderes gewesen...

Und selbstverständlich muss ich auf den letzten Metern vor Erreichen des Cruise Terminals Steinwerder auch nochmals MEINE QUEEN VICTORIA fotografieren. Nach unseren Reisen QUEEN VICTORIA 2008 (Tandem-Transatlantik mit der QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 zum ersten gemeinsamen Dreier-Treffen in New York mit QUEEN MARY 2) und QUEEN VICTORIA 2016 also zum dritten Mal an Bord MEINER QUEEN VICTORIA.



An certainly we had to stop few yards before we reach Cruise Terminal Steinwerder MY QUEEN VICTORIA and I had to take pictures. After our voyages QUEEN VICTORIA 2008 (Tandem-Transatlantic with QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 for the first meeting of three in New York, NY with QUEEN MARY 2) and QUEEN VICTORIA 2016 we were now the third time on board of MY QUEEN VICTORIA.

First, we made a wrong turn on the parking. To get to the parking of the car rentals you need to keep left. So we passed by the terminal to drop off our bags. We could not return to the car rental places and need to get out to make a u-turn and to keep left when we got inside. At this time the counter was not occupied anymore. You need to return the keys into the box, and we would see that Hertz was also now available in Steinwerder. As they were cheaper than Sixt via ADAC I just rebooked and as I could get miles with Lufthansa Miles and More for the rental.



Zunächst biegen wir jedoch an der Einfahrt zum Parkplatz falsch ab. Um an die Parkplätze für die Mietwagen zu kommen, muss man sich links halten. So fahren wir erst mal am Terminal vor, um dort unser Gepäck abzugeben. Wir kommen jedoch nicht mehr zurück zu den Mietwagenparkplätzen und müssen einmal raus, wenden und wieder neu links hereinfahren. Um die Zeit ist der Schalter nicht mehr besetzt. Wir werfen den Schlüssel in den Kasten und sehen, dass jetzt in Steinwerder auch Hertz vertreten ist. Und da sie auch günstiger sind, als Sixt über den ADAC buche ich kurzerhand auch später um, zumal auch Lufthansa Miles und More Meilen für die Anmietung gibt.

Sehr ärgerlich: unser Agent, der uns eincheckt, hat keine Lust mehr weiterzumachen, weil er an Bord Mittagessen darf. Kurzerhand sagt er uns, dass wir uns für das Einlesen der Kreditkarte nochmals bei der Rezeption melden sollen. Das ist normalerweise sehr ärgerlich, wenn man weiß, wie voll eine Rezeption am Einschiffungstag ist. Wir haben nachgefragt, ob wir nicht an einem anderen Kreditkartenterminal die Karte einlesen können: das würde für ihn bedeuten, dass er wieder von vorne anfangen müsse - das will er jedoch nicht.



Very angry: our agent who was in charge for our check-in did not like to continue because he was allowed to have lunch onboard. So he said that we need to report again to record our credit card at the check-in. Usually, it would be more than angry because you should know how busy the front desk was generally on the day of embarkation. We asked if we could not see a different credit card terminal: for him, it would mean he had to restart again - something he did not want.

My anger was very limited: because first I met here again Agata Ozga whom I had in sweet memories from our last voyage on QUEEN VICTORIA 2016 and because actually there was not any queue.



Mein Ärger hält sich jedoch in Grenzen: erstens weil ich hier Agata Ozga wiedertreffe, die ich auch in sehr netter Erinnerung von meiner letzten Reise auf der QUEEN VICTORIA 2016 habe und weil im Moment keine Schlange ist.

Für meinen Geburtstag muss ich allerdings an der Rezeption einen Kuchen bestellen und bezahlen: 18,00 USD (2018). Für die günstigste Variante.

4026 was our new cabin. Rudy was our cabin steward. Unfortunately, none transferred him our request from the manifest: so he needed to separate our beds.



4026 ist unsere neue Kabine. Rudy ist unser Kabinensteward. Leider hat man wohl unseren Wunsch im Manifest nicht weiterübermittelt: er muss noch unsere Betten auseinander bauen.

Ein paar Änderungen. Man sieht leider den Vorhängen an, dass jemand mal hier geraucht hat. Schade, dass so etwas nicht ersetzt wird. Man sieht leider auch auf dem Boden unseres Balkons, dass draußen auf den Balkonen immer noch gerne geraucht wird und die Zigarettenkippen einfach über die Railing geworfen werden. Die Klimaanlage bläst uns zu stark. Wir kleben sie teilweise ab. Den Sekt nehmen wir mit nach Hause und lassen den Eiskübel mitnehmen, der allerdings einfach unter dem Bett verschwindet. Leider hat es Cunard dann noch nicht so gut gemeint: die Kabine ist direkt über dem Theater: und wir bekommen die Show mit, in der auch unter anderem Stücke von Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons gesungen wird. Bei "Walk like a Man" singe ich auch noch mich selbst in den Schlaf mit. Ich bin aber so k.o., dass ich das Ende der Show nicht mehr mitbekomme. Zum Glück wird die Show überkreuzt angeboten: Gäste der 1. Tischzeit gehen zur 2. Show und umgekehrt. Dadurch die ist 2. Show auch sehr früh bereits zu Ende.



Few changes. You could see with the curtains that someone smoked here before. Sad that something like that would not be replaced. You could still see on the floor of our balcony that outside they were still smoking and they still threw away the cigarette butts over the railing. The outcome of the air condition was too strong for us. So we taped parts of the outcome. The champagne we took home and let them remove the ice bucket which was hidden in the drawers under the bed. But unfortunately, Cunard did not mean it so good: The cabin was right above the theater: and we could participate in the show where they also played songs by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. With "Walk like a Man" I was singing together to have a lullaby. I was so tired that I did not get notice of the end of the show. Luckily they offered the show over crossed: guests of the 1st sitting went to the 2nd show and vice versa. So the 2nd show ended quite early.

In the bathroom, there was still not enough space.

Still, they had the shower with the cheapest rails for the curtains which were damaged all the way.

Und so gleitet der Vorhang auch nicht und man braucht viel Gewalt, um um die Ecken zu kommen.



So the curtain was not sliding anymore, and you need some power to get around the corner.

Right after the end of the lunch offer, we went to the Lido Café.



Kurz nach Ende des Mittagsangebotes gehen wir ins Lido Café.

Eine Kleinigkeit gibt es immer zu essen.



But they still kept some small bites ready to eat.

Das sind mittlerweile auch 3,75 USD (2018) plus NUR 15% Auto-Tipping, nachdem andere schon so unverschämt sind 20% zu verlangen.

We saw the coffee bar. A true one they had not anymore on board because they needed space for the Britannia Club and removed the Chart Room. The "remainder" was more or less part of the coffee bar. I.e., the offer in Sir Samuel's you had on QUEEN MARY 2 was available here now. Bruno was more than happy to learn that they changed to illy. It was too strong for me. I met here again Nadia which I had in good memories from QUEEN MARY 2 2014.



Wir suchen die Kaffeebar auf. Eine echte gibt es gar nicht an Bord, weil man damals für den Britannia Club Platz brauchte und den Chart Room quasi entfernt hat. Dessen "Reste" bildet jetzt dann die Kaffeebar. D. h. hier gibt es das Angebot, das es auf der QUEEN MARY 2 bei Sir Samuel's gibt. Es ist allerdings zur Freude von Bruno auf illy umgestellt worden. Mir ist er zu stark. Ich treffe hier Nadia wieder, die ich von der QUEEN MARY 2 2014 kenne.

Da Bruno ein wenig laufen will, ziehe ich alleine herum, um Selfies zu machen. Egal, wieviele ich von der QUEEN VICTORIA besitze: sie strahlt immer noch eine große Anziehung aus.



As Bruno would like to do some running I browsed by myself to take some selfies. No matter how many I had already from QUEEN VICTORIA: she was still an attraction.

Due to our Platinum membership, we may use 240 minutes for free. You must not pay any activation fee either to access your free minutes. As Gold-Member you only get 120 minutes. So we need to ask because of Bruno. We had really luck: Adam Ritchin could check Bruno's history and found out that he really should be a Platinium. He booked for him the 240 minutes package and credit it to him immediately. That was really excellent customer service. As I was not willing to pay for incoming calls about 2.50 USD/minute for T-Mobile I just turned on the call diversion. So the phone calls should go to our home phone in Germany, and I should get a voice-message as e-mail-attachment. And I turned off the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). You need to pay for the receipt of MMS as well. The only MMS which imposed me to have were pictures of Costa-ships whenever they see one Costa-Ship. To avoid that I must not pay any more for those stupid MMS I decided to block this contact in my iPhone. I was curious to see if it worked.



Aufgrund unser Platin-Mitgliedschaft, dürfen wir 240 Minuten kostenlos surfen. Man bezahlt auch keine Aktivitierungsgebühren, um an die freien Minuten zu kommen. Als Gold bekommt man nur 120 Minuten. Also müssen wir doch mal wegen Bruno nachfragen. Wir haben sehr viel Glück: Adam Ritchin prüft kurzerhand Brunos Historie und stellt fest, dass er tatsächlich Platin ist. Er bucht kurzerhand die 240 Minuten ein und schreibt sie sofort wieder gut. Das ist wirklich ein toller Kundenservice. Da ich keine Lust habe für einkommenden Gespräche an meinem Geburtstag 1,99 EUR/Minute (2018) an Telekom zu bezahlen, schalte ich die Rufumleitung ein. So gehen die Gespräche zu uns nach Deutschland und ich bekomme eine Sprachnachricht als E-Mail-Anhang. Und die MMS schalte ich auch ab. Denn auch für den Empfang von MMS-Nachrichten muss man zahlen. Die einzigen MMS, die mir aufgezwungen werden, kommen von Leuten, die meinen, dass sich mein Verhältnis zu Costa verbessert, wenn sie mir bei jeder Gelegenheit ein Foto per MMS von Costa-Schiffen schicken. Damit ich nicht mehr weiter für die eingehenden MMS zahlen muss, habe ich kurzerhand diese Kontakte im iPhone blockiert. Mal sehen, ob das funktioniert.

Wir müssen zur Seenotrettungsübung. Klassisch mit Rettungsweste. Allerdings nur im Restaurant und nicht an den Sammelstationen. Später werden wir allerdings noch dahingeführt. Wir kommen früh und stellen fest, dass dieser Tisch eigentlich blöd ist, weil man in der Ecke gar nichts sehen kann. Außerdem pustet die Spülmaschine wohl wieder die Körner vom Brötchen auf die Teller zurück...



We need to see the life drill. It was the classical way with life vests. But only in the restaurant and not at the muster station. Later they escorted us there. We came early and found out that this table was stupid somehow because you could not see anything around the corner. And the dishwasher was blowing obviously the seeds of the rolls back on the plate...

The preparation for the set sail was in progress. On the pier, it was really calm.

Another short walk before we went for dinner.



Noch ein kleiner Rundgang bevor es zum Essen geht.

Ich habe keine 1. Tischzeit bestellt. Ich habe aber auch keine Lust mich anzustehen, um um eine Änderung zu bitten. Die Schlange ist lang, weil es vor Öffnung des Restaurants keine Sprechstunde des Maître gab, um Änderungswünsche zu äußern. Es gibt natürlich Probleme, weil sie uns zum Ende der 1. Tischzeit raus haben wollen und ich aber lieber die Ausfahrt fotografieren möchte. Wer möchte schon bei der Ausfahrt in Hamburg im Restaurant sein: deswegen immer 2. Tischzeit. Und wenn ich sie nicht haben kann, dann dürfen sie sich nicht wundern, dass ich eben meine Pläne verfolge, als mich an die Tischzeiten zu halten. Weil ich nichts finde, was ich wirklich mag, lasse ich mir kurzerhand ein Steak (nicht so toll) mit ein paar Erbsen zubereiten. Der Service von Shailendra und Melania mit Oberkellner Joaquim Fernandes ist wie üblich bei Cunard sehr nett. Sie haben sogar nach meiner Rückkehr vom Fotografieren mir noch Nachtisch angeboten. Aber da ich ja eh nicht so der Freund von Nachtisch bin, konnte ich gut darauf verzichten. Da wir am nächsten Tag nicht hier essen wollen, verabschieden wir uns auch direkt wieder.



I did not order 1st sitting. I did not like to queue up either to request a change. The queue was long as they had no consultation hour of the Maître for change requests before the opening of the restaurant. We certainly had problems because they wanted us out for the end of the 1st sitting. And if I could not get it, then they should not be surprised that followed my own plans but to be kept at the table since I wanted to take my pictures. Because I could not find anything which I loved to eat, I asked them to have a steak (not so good) with some peas prepared for me. The service of Shailendra and Melania with Head Waiter Joaquim Fernandes was very nice as usual with Cunard. They even offered me some dessert after I returned from taking pictures. But as I was not really the big friend of desserts I was able to say no. Since we had not the intention to dine here again the next day we immediately say good-bye.

I found on board my American cough syrup. And not for 20 USD. So I need to buy my half-year-supply that I must not carry it all the way back from the US.



An Bord finde ich den amerikanischen Hustensaft. Und nicht für 19,90 CHF. Sofort muss ich meinen Halbjahresvorrat kaufen, damit ich ihn nicht von den USA wieder zurückschleppen muss.

Auf den Umsatz kommen 19% deutsche Mehrwertsteuer und nicht noch eine zusätzliche Steuer, die eine andere Gesellschaft "erfunden" hat, um noch mehr Geld zu machen.



On the revenue you need to top 19% German VAT and not an additional taxes another cruise line "invented" to make more money.

The last time they kept the bookstore closed because they could not make a difference between 7% and 19% VAT for books (in Germany only 7% to support culture). But now they charge 19% for all. Who did not like it could just leave it and place a home order delivery with Amazon.



Das letzte Mal hatte die Buchhandlung noch geschlossen, weil man nicht zwischen den 7% und 19% MWSt. für Bücher auseinanderhalten konnte. Aber jetzt gilt einheitlich 19% für alles. Wer also es nicht will kann es einfach lassen und dann bei Amazon zu Hause bestellen.

Nicht-Europäer können sich die MWSt. für die Einkäufe zurückerstatten lassen.

Und bald kommen wir in Blankenese vorbei. Dort werden wir dann wohnen: Strandhotel Blankenese. Von der Logik her: wenn ich vom Schiff das Hotel sehe, müsste ich vom Hotel aus auch das Schiff sehen - oder???



And soon we reached Blankenese (neighbourhood of Hamburg, Germany). There we would stay Strandhotel Blankenese. Sounds logical - or is not it? If I could see the hotel from the ship - I should see the ship when I will be in the hotel???

In the evening the service changed in the Chart Room. You even got a glass of water for your coffee.



Abends ändert sich der Service im Chart Room. Dann gibt es sogar ein Glas Wasser zum Kaffee.

Aber mir ist er zu bitter und schlägt mir auf den Magen.

As we had no dessert we asked what they had here: nothing - although it was indicated that they should have something available between 17:30 hrs and 21:30 hrs.



Da wir ja keinen Nachtisch hatten, fragen wir nach, was es hier noch gibt: Nichts - obwohl hier ausdrücklich steht, dass etwas zwischen 17:30 Uhr und 21:30 Uhr auch etwas angeboten wird.

So bleibt es beim Kaffee nach dem Essen.

We went upstairs to see what they had in the Lido Café. Great offer here. So we need to try some goodies. The shrimps were fantastic. Maybe we should dine here up in the future. Also, the ham-herbs-terrine was really yummy. The cold chicken breast was prepared very well.



Wir gehen aber oben noch ins Lido Café gucken. Tolles Angebot hier oben. Ein paar Kleinigkeiten müssen wir hier probieren. Die Shrimps sind ja fantastisch. Vielleicht sollten wir künftig nur noch hier oben essen. Auch die Schinken-Kräuter-Terrine ist richtig lecker. Die kalte Hühnchenbrust ist toll gebraten.
